The Story of Calphalon

In 1963, metals-industry executive Ronald Kasperzak purchased a small Ohio manufacturing company that specialized in a range of aluminum products. Kasperzak was a lover of fine foods and entertaining, and he saw his future in the company's line of heavy-duty cookware for the commercial food-service industry. He was dead-on. He made cookware his core product, and within 10 years the company became the second-largest supplier of cookware to restaurants. In the late '60s, the company latched onto new aerospace and architectural technology, using an electrochemical process called "hard-anodizing" to give aluminum a uniquely durable surface. With this process, aluminum not only provided high conductivity and even heating, it was now also 30 percent harder than stainless steel. Home cooks reaped the benefits in 1975, when the company (which took the name Calphalon in 1977) entered the retail market. By 1993, the service-industry line was discontinued as demand grew for professional-quality equipment in the home; Calphalon had again proved a talent for seeing into the future. A subsidiary of the Newell Company since 1998, Calphalon is a supporter of the Share Our Strength antihunger organization.
