Selecting a Reciprocating Shaker on Amazon.com
A reciprocating shaker, also known as a rolling or reciprocal shaker, has a platform that moves from side to side to agitate substances within lab containers. Reciprocating shakers differ in their reciprocating range, or stroke length, which is a measure of the linear movement of the platform. In general, a stroke length of 20mm or more provides the most thorough mixing of large volumes. Platform size and load rating also varies from shaker to shaker. Most shakers have controls for adjusting the shaking speed and the duration of the agitation, and some have a digital readout for monitoring operation. Certain models have a load sensor that detects an imbalance and automatically reduces or stops shaking to help safeguard samples. A reciprocating shaker is used for applications such as cell cultures, solubility studies, and extraction.
