Specimen Collection Containers
A variety of specimen collection containers are used in medical and scientific settings to collect and store samples for diagnostic testing or research. Sample containers include tubes, jars, and cups. A collection tube is commonly used to collect blood samples and may be made of glass or plastic. Specimen jars are found in educational or research settings and come in a variety of capacities. These glass or plastic containers typically have a wide mouth for ease of filling. A specimen cup is typically used to collect fluid samples for diagnostic tests. It is usually sterile and comes with a lid designed to be leak-proof. Other specimen collection supplies include tissue cassettes, which are used to process and store tissue samples taken during biopsies, surgical procedures, or autopsies, and filter paper cards (also known as FTA cards) that isolate nucleic acids from biological sources for testing such as DNA analysis.
