Selecting a Chromatography Tank on Amazon.com
A chromatography tank, also called a chromatography jar or thin-layer chromatography chamber, is a container used in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to hold a small amount of solvent and one or more upright TLC plates. The plate is prepared with a layer of adsorbent material such as silica gel, along with a small spot of sample near the base. Once the plate is placed in the developing tank, the solvent travels up the plate, carrying the sample compound where parts attracted to the silica separate from the other components that continue moving up the plate. A chromatography tank is commonly made of clear borosilicate glass for resistance to high temperatures and visual inspection of the TLC process. TLC chambers may be square, rectangular, or cylindrical. They are available in capacities ranging from 4L to 36L and accommodate plates of various sizes. Most tanks come with a stopper or tight-fitting lid to contain vapor solvents.
