Selecting a TLC Plate on Amazon.com
In thin-layer chromatography (TLC), a TLC plate provides the surface for the chromatographic test. It is coated with a thin layer of adsorbent material, such as silica gel. A drop of sample compound is placed at the lower edge of the TLC plate, which is placed upright in a tank that contains a small amount of solvent. As the solvent moves up the plate, it carries the sample through the silica and causes it to separate into components. TLC plates may be made of glass, aluminum, or plastic in a broad range of dimensions. Flexible aluminum or plastic plates may be cut into smaller sizes. They commonly come with a silica coating and may have a fluorescent indicator to enable visualization of the sample components under ultraviolet light.
