Selecting an Insulation Tester on Amazon.com
An insulation tester, also called an insulation resistance tester, is an electrical testing device that is commonly used to evaluate the condition of insulation around wires in an electrical system. Insulation can become worn, damaged, or break down due to moisture or age. In these cases, current can leak from the wiring, causing damage or malfunction of the electrical system or equipment.
The tester applies DC voltage to the wiring to be tested, and measures the resistance of the insulation in ohms. Considerations when selecting an insulation tester include the voltage rating of the equipment to be tested and the voltage required to conduct the test on the equipment. An insulation tester may measure three types of leakage: conductive leakage current, capacitive charging leakage current, and polarization absorption leakage current. Manufacturers include Fluke and Megger.
