2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Rafael A. Torrech on April 16, 2005
Format: Unknown Binding
I am Rafael A. Torrech San Inocencio, author of the book. I have to give it five stars, since is the product of decades of historical research. This book was competitively selected for publication by the Puerto Rican Endowment for the Humanities to initiate a series of special publications. Although it is not available in bookstores, it can be acquired directly from the Foundation at 787 721-2087, or at fphpr@prtc.net. A new updated edition is sheduled for 2006.

The book is a historical overview of Puerto Rican barrios (wards) with emphasis on rural history and demography. In particular, the study of the names of the barrios, and its relation to "hatos" and other territorial units in the early colonization of Puerto Rico, provides significant clues in the often overlooked early post-Columbian history of Puerto Rico. These names provide trails to pre-Columbian indian settlements, initial colonizers and settlers, 16th, 17th and 18th haciendas and "hatos", as well as their crops (some little known), other agricultural and livestock activities, fauna, flora, hidrology and ecologic history, and the mentalities of the early inhabitants of the island, portrayed in the names they gave to their surroundings. It also helps to pinpoint geographicaly some key elements in our early history. As Marc Bloch said in its masterpiece on French Rural History, it tries to follow the line of time backwards, from current names to past times, unveiling many elements often overlooked in official historical accounts.

Excellent book. I knew the author but I had been unable to get my hands on a copy. Thank you. I am meeting the author next May and will have him sign it and dedicate it. It is a great masterpiece about our homeland and the author is a sensible and knowledgeable writer.
