Il Fior di battaglia di Fiore dei Liberi,
By Rich the Writer "Nietzsche had it right!" (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Il Fior di battaglia di Fiore dei Liberi da Cividale (Il Codice Ludwig XV 13 del J. Paul Getty Museum) (Paperback)
I have been involved in martial arts for some 37 years. For the last couple of years I have become intrigued by Western Martial Arts. Upon examining book on Fillipo Vadi's system, I was hooked.
The techniques in the various manuals on the topic of Fiore Dei Liberi's Flos Duellatorum (Latin for Flower of Battle) are precise, and totally applicable even for the modern martial artist. There are a number of good books available concerning Flos Duellatorum, and for the moment, all of them are in the Italian language. This also includes Il Fior di battaglia di Fiore dei Liberi da Cividale (Il Codice Ludwig XV 13 del J. Paul Getty Museum) by Massimo Malipiero. This book begions by discussing Fiore's life and times, then it delves into the various minutiae concerning the type and style of clothing worn by the people depicted in the Getty version. From there it continues by discussing the language used in the manuscript. All of these chapters are essentially trying to pin down the exact era that Fiore lived in. The meat of the book is towards the latter half of the book, where the entire Getty manuscript is shown and discussed. It takes the written comments and renders them from Old Italian to modern Italian. The pictures presented from the manuscript are in fine detail. From what you see as a technique, the comments might even be superfluous. Enthusiasts of Flos Duellatorum should go to the J Paul Getty Museum website for more information on The Flower of Battle (Fior di Battaglia The current Italian title of the book) In conclusion, I would say that this book can be an invaluable addition to your Western Martial Arts library.
