5.0 out of 5 stars I love Tango
I loved this video. Maybe because I love Argentine Tango. There is so much individuality expressed by each of the eight couples, that it seems like Tango has no limits. This dance is for everyone. It has everything to satisfy anybody's taste. The quality of dancers in this show is world-class. It is hard to imagine how it can get much better, but somehow I believe that...

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate
Good content, poor production quality. Half of the time, the male dancer's movements can be seen with great difficulty due to very poor lighting. The sound (music) from one of Gustavo's performace echos, probably due to audio equipment setup problem; very annoying. Camara work is OK; can be improved, but that's the least of the aforementioned problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars The good and the not so good..., May 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The best of the performances by the Masters of Argentine Tango - Vol. I [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is very good in a sense that it demonstrates the true Argentine Tango, which is rarely seen in the USA. Some of the performances are simply amazing. It is not an instructional video, but a recording of a live show in a theater. The not so good part of this video is the fact that some of the scenes are too dark for being able to truly enjoy the magnificent dancers. It makes no sense to compare this video to a movie or an instructional video. There is absolutely nothing on the market to compare this video to. It is definitely unique and well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior tangos, June 17, 2001

This review is from: The best of the performances by the Masters of Argentine Tango - Vol. I [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is full of dances that are pure pleasure. Although this is not an instructional video, it will benefit tango dancers of all skill levels, from beginners (with no experience) to instructors (with several years of experience). Why? Not because they will quickly learn the tango floorcraft or proper leading and following skills, but because this video demonstrates incredibly complicated figures performed by super advanced dancers. Just seeing the enormous variety of styles and choreographies will change viewer's perception of what real Tango is and should be. Clearly the best Tango dancers are still in Argentina and we all need to learn from them.

4.0 out of 5 stars One to watch again and again, February 24, 2001

This review is from: The best of the performances by the Masters of Argentine Tango - Vol. I [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a performance, not a "How To" video, but for those of us who enjoy Argentine tango, it's a delight to study the steps and decide which can be incorporated into our own repetoire. The camerawork is not tricky, and almost always shows the entire dancer. The lighting for the performance, however, was "theatrical", meaning a bit dark. If the men are in dark trousers, it is difficult to see what their feet are doing. After watching Sally Potter's "The Tango Lesson", it was fun to see both Gustavo Naveira and Fabian Salas (who played Pablo Veron's friends in the movie) performing in this video. There is a wide range of tango, from dramatic to acrobatic, from simple and lyric to comic. Pricey as videos go, but much cheaper than a trip to Buenos Aires to see the best tango dancers in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Tango, por favor!, June 7, 2001

Adjust your TV settings: more volume, more light, less contrast, less color. When you are done, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show - the best authentic, real Tango show on this planet! The dancers are incredible, the music is fantastic, and 16 performances are simply not enough to satisfy the hunger. More tango, por favor!

Phenomenal performances by Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, plus those by Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli and Lucia Mazer, Eduardo Cappussi and Mariana, and others, make this video a must in any dance lover's collection. Totally unique choreographies are matched with dramatic music that simply makes you want to get up and dance this amazing thing they call the "Argentine Tango". This dance has no equals. These dancers are out of this world. I just wish this video was available on DVD, because I know that will watch this tape at least 100 more times. Volumes 2 and 3 ... are great also.

Gustavo Naveira and his partner Giselle Anne are incredible in this video. Their musicality is unmatched by any other tango couple and the complexity and speed of their movements are incomparable also. Gustavo and Giselle have everything and lack nothing in their interpretation of Argentine Tango. I also loved two other couples in this video: Mariano "Chicho" Frumboli and Lucia Mazer with their daring choreographies, and Eduardo Cappussi and Mariana Flores with their comedic approach to Tango. The older couple of Rodolfo and Maria Cieri were very special also. Overall, a terrific video, destined to become a collector's item.

The title of this video is correct. This is truly the best of tango dancing that I have ever seen - live or on tape. The variety of styles displayed by all the couples is amazing. The imaginative choreographies are fantastic. This is real Argentine Tango. Bravo! Bravo!
