can I use the built in amp to drive one set of speakers and use the pre-amp output to another amp for more speakers?

I think you will find you can connect up more than one set of speakers anyway on the same amp
ie speakers 1 and 2 you can lay speakers in another room to play from that amplifier just switch over on the remote control

The pre amp output also has pre amp input, so the signal goes out but has to come back into the amp. Its good for effects or even equalization. But it does have speaker output 1

From the owners manual: "The HK 3390 may be used with up to two pairs of speakers. ... Select each pair of speakers by pressing its associated button on either the front panel or remote."
