The Burning of Evelyn Foster was published in 1977. It is nonfiction, an investigation of the murder of a young woman which occurred in Ireland (if I remember correctly.) According to the reference work, "Encyclopedia of World Crime" by Jay Robert Nash, Evelyn Foster was murdered on Jan. 6, 1931, "at an isolated spot on the moors known locally as Wolf's Nick". The car was set on fire and, waking, she escaped from the interior. The car exploded, after which two men found her and took her home. "In the brief hours before she died, she told what had happened to her." (vol. II (D-J), p. 1202). But the case was never solved.


It is an excellent book, well-written and well-researched. It is a very vivid depiction of life in rural Ireland in the early 1930's. Even more vivid - and chilling - are the accounts of the discovery of the crime, and Evelyn's last hours as she told her story while she lay dying. I read the book several years ago, and it has haunted me ever since, to the extent that I went through considerable effort to track down a copy that I could purchase.
