Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The forest of the title is a metaphor for the classical culture of China, set to the torch by the Communists. In this collection of essays, Leys celebrates that heritage and decries Maoismwhose leaders he terms "an incompetent and half-literate ruling class." The book's most rewarding passages examine aspects of Chinese history and culture, showing an acute appreciation of the Chinese worldview and its traditional expressions. The author's analysis of contemporary China, recounting abuses of the Communist regime (particularly during the Cultural Revolution), analyzing its major figures and projecting its future, is informed and articulate. Too often, though, his commentary descends from the sharp to the splenetic, particularly when critiquing other China watchers and academics. In all, a provocative look at China and its prospects by the author of Chinese Shadows. Leys is the pseudonym of Pierre Ryckmans, who teaches at an Australian university. January

From Library Journal

Leys, best known for his Chinese Shadows ( LJ 7/77), continues in that vein of scandalously enjoyable and bilious wit. He ridicules China's foreign friends and self-promoting experts for their "double vision" and condescending failure to hold China up to humane standards on questions of human rights, political democracy, and economic development. He offers little positive information or analysis, however, preferring debunking to analyzing. There is also a charming and informative essay on the Fathers Huc and Gabet, whose chronicle of China travel, Travels in Tartary , is an unjustly neglected classic. These essays have been previously published, but most often in inaccessible journals. Leys fans will therefore welcome this collection. Charles W. Hayford, History Dept., Northwestern Univ., Evanston, Ill.

5.0 out of 5 stars superb essays on Chinese matters, August 19, 2008

(REAL NAME)
In this book and his others, "Simon Leys" (a non-de-plume for Belgian sinologist Pierre Ryckmans) gives some of the best perspectives on Chinese politics and culture you'll ever read.

Besides The Burning Forest, see also The Chairman's New Clothes (1971), Chinese Shadows (1976), and Broken Images (1981). The collection titled The Angel and the Octopus (1999) contains a number of essays on Chinese matters, political and cultural.

His Wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Leys) lists several more, but these are in French only.

The experience of reading Leys/Ryckmans is like having a bucket of cool -- but not cold -- water poured over your head on a hot day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book From Simon Leys., November 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was first published in 1983.

From the author's afterword: "The essays in this collection deal essentially with history, political ethics, ideas, and culture, and also with the problem of how the West interprets China."

Whatever they deal with they do it with great understanding, scholarship and love of China. This inevitably resonates with anyone who cares for China at all and at the same time can't fail to please, stimulate, satisfy anyone else who might merely be reading from idle curiosity - or simple love of books.

For the author is more than a great scholar brilliantly expounding his subject, he's also a great writer, a wonderful writer to read, easy and pleasing.
