5.0 out of 5 stars Really excellent and underrated!, November 6, 2001
This review is from: cKy, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
I was exposed to CKY through the CKY2K and CKY videos, which are hilarious, and I finally got around to picking up Vol. 1. It quickly became one of my favourite CD's of all time. Their sound is original, filled with innovative gritty riffs; Deron and Chad are very talented guitarists who think up stuff other bands wish they were creative enough to play. The music draws influences from many genres, grunge, alternative, even a tiny bit of techno, as in the beginning of Human Drive In Hi-Fi. The drumming is hard and consistent and really helps give the music drive. They also have a great range of vocals. Some of my favourite songs are Sara's Mask, where they use a softer sound as effectively as they do a hard one, the opening track 96 Quite Bitter Beings, which has really tight guitars and bass, Disengage the Simulator, My Promiscuous Daughter.. hell, all of the songs are good. This is one of the few CD's I can listen to all the way through without skipping anything. CKY definitely has enough talent to hold their own against all the other mass produced bands out there and I hope they'll start getting the attention and credit they deserve!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air., June 1, 2002
This review is from: cKy, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
This album is truly one of the most innovative and powerful discs of the new millenium thusfar... a record that sounds destined to stand the rigors of time, 10, 15 years from now. CKY is a return to old school riff rock without sounding old school at all, a band operating on their own terms and procedures in an era where music is based on fickle trends and industry paychecks. Every song on Volume 1 sounds equally inspired and original, strong enough to stand alone or make an impact within the context of the CD.

96 Quite Bitter Beings kicks things off with a riff that is already considered classic (the Jackass shopping cart song, kiddies), and the onslaught rages forth until the last chord. Volume 1 manages to be diverse without sounding jagged, every song blending seamlessly. Deron Millers voice, while not particularly outstanding, provides the perfect vehicle for the hypnotic vocal hooks and subdued lyrical delivery that weave in and out of Chad Ginsburg's bombastic wall of sound production techniques and what-if-Jimmy-Page-was-in-Rage-Against-the-Machine riffs. Yet CKY's sound remains elusive and always fresh.

From the ethereal beauty of Disengage the Simulator and the beautiful Sarah's Mask to the horns up furor of Rio Bravo and Promiscuous Daughter, Volume 1 deserves to be heard. There is still room for improvement and if rough demos are any indication, the next chapter in the CKY saga shall do just that. 5 out of 5.

Whether you're a crazed Bam Margera fan, or you're just getting turned on to the CKY videos this CD is for you. From the title song "96 Quite Bitter Beings" used in MTV's Jackass (the shopping cart song), CKY, CKY2K, and Tony Hawk 3, you can tell this is an album to jump off a building to. From their slow grooves like "Knee Deep" or "Sara's Mask" to their pace building anthems like "My Promiscuous Daughter" or "The Human Drive In hi-fi" you'll not want to put this one down. Perfect for the Jackass in your life.
