My son needs a camera for Photography Class that has manual controls and a standard lens, would this work?

I"m going to have to disagree with the previous comment. This camera would be fine for use in a photography class. It does in fact have the ability to use the camera in manual mode, shutter mode , aperture, etc.
So yes, this camera would serve your son well.

No this does not have a manual focus setting.

I don't think so. Manual controls means he has to be able to set the f stop and shutter speed. If there's a dark room, he needs something like a standard SLR camera that uses film instead of a digital camera. That's the first question you have to ask the teacher.
