Book Description

Templeton Ngubane has been a black cop in the apartheid police for 17 years. The banned ANC liberation movement is doing everything possible -- sometimes brutally -- to mobilize the black townships and make the country ungovernable.
Ngubane is trapped in two worlds. On one hand he has a sense of loyalty to the organization he serves and he believes, if the crunch comes, it will stand by and support him and his family... on the other he questions some of the laws in place and knows he is considered by many in his community, an instrument of an unjust system.
As the ANC turns up the heat in the townships, policemen and municipal councillors are considered government collaborators and are targeted for attack.
When Templeton’s house is set alight and destroyed by residents from his neighborhood, a chain of events with consequences beyond anything he can imagine, and seemingly destined to destroy his family, is set in motion.
And when he is betrayed by the very organization he serves, he must make a terrible choice to save his only son.
"I Can Hear Them Singing Now" will shake you to your core. It is a story you will never forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly moving April 9, 2012

Having grown up in apartheid South Africa, I have to admit I wasn't sure I wanted to read about this painful part of our history but within the first few chapters I realized this was not a political story but a human story and beautifully told. The author tells a terrible story in a most humane way and shows that as humans we are both frail and strong and good and evil. This story will stay with me for a long time and I think that is the hallmark of a great story.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute ripper, couldn't put it down April 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
An excellent read. You get drawn into the story right from the start and cannot put it down from that point onwards. My only complaint, without trying to give the ending away is that I was a bit haunted/disturbed by the ending and couldn't stop thinking about it for days, but I guess that's the mark of a good story..

This book's extremely talented presentation of the terrible times in South Africa has moved me like very few other cultural events. A definite must read. Bravo to the Author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! May 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is fantastic! It creatively entwines heart wrenching emotion, solid political history, and an unbiased, multi-sided portrayal of racial conflict during a turbulent time. One will intensely feel frustration, rage, and despair while reading this story. The characters are well-developed in such a way that the reader cannot help but feel a personal connection to them, during the transformation of their beliefs and convictions while enduring the horrific event enveloping their lives. This story inspires much emotion and, for me, critical thought about human behavior and relationships. It would not be the book I'd choose for lighthearted, cheerful reading, but definitely thought provoking. It may even have you re-evaluating your own beliefs and/or opinions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let me dry my tears May 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Let me dry my tears! This is an incredible story. Thank you for letting me read it. It touched my heart in many ways.

How would you feel if you learned your neighbors, people you've known for years, are burning down your home? That is a terrible thing for anybody to hear, but especially harrowing when you are crouching in the back of an armored police vehicle and not able to do a thing about it.
Can you imagine the awful realization of being a condemned person standing on a platform, your feet placed on painted footprints, a hood around your face and a noose around your neck, about to be hung when a trap door is sprung? Would you be singing as you are about to go to the gallows? Would you be praying for the best hangman in the business so that it would only take 18 seconds to die? Would you be praying as you watched the horrific spectacle?
This story is fictional but some of the characters were real and the events and descriptions accurately portray the situation that took place in South Africa at that time. It shows human suffering and heartache. It shows how humans can be cruel to one another. This story is one you won't be able to forget when you finish the last page. It will stay with you.
