can you lengthen the speaker wire?

I guess you can. One end is firmly attached the the speaker and the other end has a special plug.You would have to splice in the length you need.

You can move the speakers away from the base unit some, but, I do not think you could add your own speaker wire without cutting the existing wires, as they have special plugs on the end that connect to the base unit.

The wires already attached to the speakers have enough length to them. I'm sure if you needed more space you could splice the wires. However, Sony put their own plug on the end that plugs into the system itself.

I spliced in my own wire to length it but the inputs are plugs so u have to keep that
