Great Cherry Stoner!,
By Tom (FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cherry Pitter by Westmark (Kitchen)
I have been eating a lot of cherries this summer, and was tired of spitting out the pits. Now that I have this cherry stoner, I'm sure that I will continue to eat cherries for the rest of the season. This item is easy to put together and is dishwasher safe. I just used it this morning and all of the pits were removed even though there were different sizes of the cherries. I bought this cherry stoner because it looks like it's made well (aluminem) and the product has a guarantee of 5 years. This is my first cherry stoner and I hope to enjoy it for years to come! The item was shipped on-time in new condition.

Don't waste your money buying this unit!,

This review is from: Cherry Pitter by Westmark (Kitchen)
We have three cherry trees with three different types of cherries. I purchased this cherry stoner because reviews said it could handle all size of cherries and I wanted a high quality pitter that would last a long time. I figured you can't go wrong with German engineering! However, while it may work for larger cherries, it did not work for our smaller black cherries or our pie cherries. The rubber gasket kept coming out of its holder and I had to empty the hopper and take it apart and fix it, only to stop working again every few cherries. The hopper is difficult to clear if a cherry falls down into the pitting chute instead of falling into the tunnel. It only worked if I fed one cherry at a time, and then, only for the black cherries. The hopper and plunger unit do not fit together well and I continually had to adjust them so they would stay together. I ended up going to my local Fred Meyer and buying a $14.99 model from Norpro. It did not have as good of action on the plunger, and had a smaller hopper for the pits, but it stayed together, had a better design for the rubber gasket and attached to the counter so it did not move around. I had high hopes for this Westmark unit and was very disappointed. Don't waste your money on this unit!

I've used this stoner for five years now. Every summer we pick up a lug (20-25 lbs) of tart Montmency cherries from a farm in Frankfurt and I can pit them in 2 hours if I stay at it. With help from a 6 year old... add an hour and some pits!
It works well on smaller and larger cherries and pits. You just have to feed it in a constant stream, wait for the cherry to load and then plunge down on the handle hard enough to see the pit land in the clear hopper. When you don't see the pit shoot out of the cherry you know you need to check for pits. It does get stuck occasionally (it only happened once this year) when the stoner hits a pit the wrong way but it is not a big deal to clear. The frequency may depend on the shape or size of the pits. It comes with some orange rubber gaskets as well and one of them has to be loaded into the stoner or it will not work well. My only concern at this point is trying to find some replacement gaskets.
