Campbell traces, describes, and analyzes voluntary childlessness in order "to give childless couples . . . a long overdue opportunity to speak for themselves." This is accomplished through the liberal use of quotes from unstructured tape-recorded interviews with 78 individuals representing 44 marriages in a large Scottish city. The somewhat different life experiences and jargon detract from the book's usefulness to U.S. readers. Campbell attempts to find out "how the desire to remain childless emerged and was translated into action." She presents a good overview of the literature available on this topic.
