I had Vargas Llosa pegged as a liberal, so this book's cultural conservatism took me completely off-guard. It's a pleasure to read the passionate, well-reasoned arguments of the master in favor of cultural elitism and the lessons of the classics. His merciless attack on the inanity of modern culture is both sharp and politically incorrect. The absence of major conservative names in the spanish-speaking literary world of today makes this book more necessary than ever.

I am Reading the Spanish original version of the book. Having an academic background I tend to expect academically grounded texts. This book, instead, offers us a solid analytical perspective on our culture based on the views of a world class writer, a Nobel Prize winner. At first I was frustrated because I expected all the foot notes and references that I seem to relate to academic world. There is no such a thing in this book. What you get is the sophisticated view of a man that is more knowleageble them most of us talking about what we see, read, listen on a everyday perspective. The Noble Prize is talking about the way our culture functions. This book is a must.

Excelente.
