5.0 out of 5 stars On Civilized Stars, May 16, 2006
This review is from: On civilized stars: The search for intelligent life in outer space (Frontiers of science) (Unbound)
According to telecommunication expert Joseph F. Baugher, there's a very good possibility that intelligent creatures do, in fact, inhabit millions of planets in our galaxy. Why, then, when we look outward do we see no sign of their presence? Where are they? Readers will find out in On Civilized Stars, a provacative book that explores some of the places where this extra-terrestrial life could be humming.

This volume in the Frontiers of Science series begins with a look at life around our star, the sun, in light of recent discoveries made by space probes. The text then travels farther out into space - beyond our own solar system - and evaluates the chances of finding intelligent beings on planets orbiting other stars. It examines a variety of factors that affect the chances of life, including the mass, luminosity, and chemical composition of stars as well as types of planets likely to be found around these stars.

Once establishing the possibility that nearly 400 million planets in the galaxy are suitable for habitation, On Civilized Stars explores such questions as:

* What are the possible forms an alien technology might assume?

* What factors could have caused advanced extra-terrestrial societies to perish?

* What are the prospects of man's being abe to send forth space missions to other star systems to seek out alien civilizations?

* Is there any evidence supporting the theory of prehistoric extra-terrestrial visitors?

* What about the extra-terrestrial origin of UFO's?

Concluding with a discussion of the possibility of communicating with extra-terrestrial life by radio signals, On Civilized Stars is an important book that could aid us in our search for those who might perhaps teach us about the art of survival.
