I have a personal link to this story in that I knew one of the people who went with Hugh Downs on this cruise. Virgil Bowers was a ham radio operator, as am I. In 1969 he approached me in his capacity as communications co-ordinator for project Hope who operated the Hospital ship of the same name. He convinced me to go with the ship on their cruise to Tunisia as their ham radio operator to enable phone patches for the people on the ship so they could talk to friends and family at home. During the time I was there I had the opportunity to crew on a sail boat, a slightly smaller 56 footer, for an Atlantic crossing back to the carribean. It was an excellent adventure and I'm forever grateful to him and to ham radio for making it all possible.
