Edit...9/27/2012 There have been several updates to this game since my original review, all for the better. This is game is definitely one of the best games out there, android or apple, and keeps getting better. And what other game does the developer (see comments) answer/address your concerns directly?

Following is the original review with updates at the end:

This is a good game but as of now it has some minor flaws on a Kindle Fire. First you cannot use earphones because this game makes you play it in portrait mode and the earphone jack is at the bottom of the Kindle and you have to hold up the Kindle or it will keep hitting and rubbing the plug on the earphones. Yep, it plays in portrait mode. Once you start playing it is apparent to me this game would be much better in landscape mode. Another problem is that you cannot rotate the Kindle in any other position so now you also will have it turning itself off sometimes because the on/off button it at the bottom of the Kindle and as you set the Kindle down, it will hit the button and automatically turn itself off.

This game is a dungeon crawler that uses the one step position method. You hit a button and you move one step forward, backward, to the right or to the left. To keep moving forward you have to hit the button again. Also you can only face in four positions, north, south, west or east (although you can use your finger on the screen and look around). But with the map, you actually can move around pretty fast by just hitting the direction you want to go several times, that helps a lot. Game is a RPG with typical setup of crawling around the dungeon gaining experience and getting better weapons and armor. There is also the ability to buy and sell goods. But it has VERY old school graphics and movement. I read a review comparing this to the original Doom but I do not think that is correct. Doom has much more advanced graphics and movement. The characters (monsters) in this game are like photo cutouts that just do minor movements and then relocate on a different square (game plays like you are on a grid system, or giant chess board (as explained above)). (Edit...characters move much more now, must have been a game update).

Another problem is the game locks up a lot and will freeze your Kindle and you have to do a shutdown to get it working again. (Edit...this does not seem to happen anymore, must have been fixed in an update).

But there is one larger problem, the game will let you save once you have DIED and there is NO way to load an older save. This happened while being attacked and I went through a door. You have just lost everything and will have to start over from the very beginning. This would be big improvement to fix this problem. (Edit...after playing for a while, this became much less of a problem, I learned just not to go through door while fighting on certain levels).

But after saying all the negatives, it is a very entertaining game. The developer did a nice job with game experience, tons of loot, a buy and sell system, nice leveling up, many levels etc.

Edit...6/12/2012 I changed my original rating from 3 stars to 5. I realized that I was being hypercritical especially seeing how much time I still play this game and its initial cost. I have actually spent too much time playing this so it tells me I enjoyed it much more than my original ratings/review said. Highly recommend.

Edit...7/10/2012 I should mention that unlike many games today, this game does NOT ask for more money once you have purchased the game and start playing. This is a rare but nice treat in that many of today's games that keep trying to get more money out of you after purchase. Some games you cannot even win unless you pay them for certain items.

Edit...8/27/2012 Wish I could figure out how to delete saved games. I know I can keep creating new games, but I have OCD and need to delete the old games first (yea I know, but for me this is IMPORTANT). Tried deleted the game file from my Fire, and then re-installing the game, but it remembered the saved games...BAD! Help

Edit...9/27/2012 Concerning how to delete old games, I took the developers suggestion and just deleted the files via the directory, it is one way to do it (I used the `Quickoffice' program that came with the Kindle to get to the directory, did not use a computer)!

Did you play PC games from the time Atari 2600 was on store shelves till Playstation 2 was released? If you were like me you avoided all the consoles in between that time because they never had good dungeon crawlers or DnD-type RPGs. Deadly Dungeons is a surprising indepth dungeon crawler that plays much like netHack or ultima underworld. If you miss this type of game then you definitely need to play this one and for only .99 cents what's stopping you!?

TOP 500 REVIEWERon July 22, 2013
I grew up playing first-person 3D dungeon crawlers back on the Apple ][e, Commodore 64, and the venerable IBM 8088 when shareware games came of 5" floppies in magazines. Back then, consoles were in their infancy and NES was nearly a decade away. If you remember those days, or you've heard your parents (or, yikes, grandparents) talk fondly of those first games, then you are in for a treat: this is a highly enjoyable game that will get you close to Ye Olde Days of Yore.

You get to choose your character and customize his or her stats, and name him or her. After the backstory, You "awake" in a cavern and immediately find yourself in an encounter. Assuming you aren't killed, there's loot to pick up. Navigate around the dark cavern, and you'll either find another encounter or a way to continue on. The play feels very much like the maze navigation from back in the day, and I do recommend you play this in the dark since the game starts out pretty dark (hey, you are in an underground cave with no light source, okay?).

The stereo music in the menu is truly worthy of the term "epic". The ambient sounds of the cave are fantastic, and the battle sounds are retro, which go great with the retro graphics! True, the graphics on a 10" tablet could have been better, as this looked in the beginning as if it belonged on a phone. But while playing, it felt so much more like those legacy games I cut my gaming teeth on that I started remembering some of those sessions from 30 years ago. If you've ever played a D&D RPG (role playing game) or something similar, whether electronically or with paper and pencil, you have a good idea of what you're about to get into.

What's shocking to me is that this is only 99-cents?!? Really?!? In all the games I've played, this is without a doubt the best 99-cent game I've encountered! Does it have a few issues? Of course. The only major downside is the complete lack of instructions. However, it gets pretty intuitive pretty quickly, so spend a few minutes playing on the easiest level with a 'throwaway' character and learn the game. At this price point and with the quality of the game, I'm fully willing to ignore this omission.

Let me put it this way: from what I've played so far, I'd pay $5 for this game and still give it five stars.

By the way, if you have seen any of my reviews of other apps and games on Amazon, you know that I won't give five stars to a game that has abusive permissions. This game has NO PERMISSIONS of concern! The only permission this game has is the ability to save your "save game" file to your SD card (which is something you want!).

If you are lucky enough to find this game, and you enjoy D&D or dungeon crawlers, or just like a nice walk down memory tunnel (good luck on that), by all means drop the Washington and have a fireball.

This game is really great. It reminds me of all my old favorite RPGS on the NES and SNES, only better! Many improvements were made to that old engine and layout, such a surprisingly epic music score and the ability to look around yourself outside of turning with the pad. And then there is the list of abilities; a huge list of spells and techniques reminiscent of Diablo II.

This is one of the few games I can say is actually better than what it emulates.

Bought this as a good dungeon crawler to mess around with. Game has lots of ways to build your character and fighting styles (magic or weapon types). Added bonus of monster graphic update from 2D to 3D realistic recently gives this game my final 5 Star rating on the Kindle Fire.

After LoG rekindled my love of classic dungeon crawlers, I look for one on every device I own. I have played through a few levels of Deadly Dungeons on my Kindle Fire HD, and I love what code_zombie has created here. While the game isn't especially deep, it has the fundamentals. There isn't a lot in the way of a story, but all I really care about in these games is crushing monsters and taking their loot while exploring a large grid map, which is exactly what this game is. The controls are easy to use and the graphics have a classic feel. Worth .99 any day.

despite some reviews saying its broken.....its NOT you just have to build your character right and learn the play style(which is simple). overall the gfx are nice for the money, no real story as of yet but it is a dungeon crawl after all. the game mechanics are like any other dungeon rpg replay ability is high there is new updates that add some nice things and with a dev active on their forums stuff gets right quick. with a wide variety of spells and items there is always a new character to be made and enjoyed(fire mage ezmodeftw) overall the game is excellent for 1$ you actually get the whole game no need to spend cash on other in game stuff, just buy it and see for yourself you wont be sorry.

This developer GETS it. A classic style dungeon crawler done right, Deadly Dungeons is very fun, very playable, and oh-so-nostalgic. I loved playing this game, and I can't wait for more to be released.

However, note the past tense there. I completely finished the game, from beginning to end, in just a few hours this evening. When you're charging five dollars for a game, there needs to be more than just a few hours of content. Right now, you've got a one or two dollar game, and because of that I just can't give it five stars.

When the game length justifies the price tag, I'll happily come back and add that last star... And play more of this great game!

Miss those old dungeon crawlers like eye of the beholder or might and magic? Your search is over. This game is worth more than the measly 99 cents it is being sold for. Get it, you wont be sorry.

This is like the original "Eye of the Beholder" type RPG. You pick a charactervand start playing. A couple of hints...use a bow...concentrate on building up on type of magic spellband save often.
