Product Description

Tuner gStrings provides musicians of all abilities with a customizable chromatic tuner for their Android device. Tuner gStrings lets you tune your guitar while you're on the go and works well with any stringed instrument. The tuner uses your phone's internal microphone to measure and analyze musical pitches. The app also generates reference pitches of each note if you prefer to tune to an exact tone.

The look, the feel

The gStrings tuner sports a clean and easy-to-follow interface. A scroll bar on the top of the screen lists all the notes in a chromatic scale; touching a note selects it for tuning. The middle of the screen displays an analogue meter that measures if a note is flat, sharp, or accurately tuned. The bottom of the screen provides three modes to tune your strings: Sound, Tune, and Tune Auto.

Selecting the Sound tab produces a reference note of whatever note has been selected from the top of the screen. When the note is selected, the tab is re-labeled "Stop Playing," inviting you to press it when you no longer need to hear the note.

The Tune tab is used when you want to play a note into the tuner and have it analyzed. The phone's microphone is activated, and you play a note from your instrument into your phone. The meter indicates a note's frequency if you're curious. More importantly, it displays whether a note is flat (on the left), sharp (on the right), or tuned correctly (when the needle is in the middle)

Tune Auto

Similar to the Tune mode, choosing Tune Auto also analyzes played notes through your phone's microphone. But the note is dynamic, meaning the note bar at the top of your screen changes to indicate the note closest to the note being played.

App Name
E is accurately tuned

The Settings tab, located through your phone's Menu button, provides a wealth of options. Among the most helpful:

  • Microphone Sensitivity lets you adapt your phone's internal mic to suit your current environment.
  • The Optimize For setting lets you specify frequency ranges most suitable for your instrument. While guitar is the most popular instrument, settings are provided for violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, and ukelele.
  • Orchestra Tuning. For advanced users, this setting allows you to adjust specific tone frequencies to match a different frequency range.

Overall, Tuner gStrings is easy to use, with no need to plug your instrument in. gStrings is a highly accurate and popular tuner.

This is a great app for Android cell phones. Unfortunately, I purchased this for my new kindle Fire and it did not work no matter how much I tweaked the settings.

This app works great on my droid incredible, and I got it for free a couple years ago. I just bought it for my Kindle Fire HD, and it doesn't work at all. Waste of money.

Used the free version for a year. It is just so useful, I figured I'd help the cause. Even nicer w/ out the ads! Great tuner, and this is from a guitar playing, public school band teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have tuner app! May 2, 2011

This app is as accurate as any tuner i've used. It's just better to be able take the phone and use this app, rather than having to lug around any other tuner. Must have for any guitar player.

seems to me more accurate than my Yamaha electronic tuner, and it's always with me on the phone. Use it so much that it is the first app on my phone that I sprung for the paid version.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a piano-tuning app.
It has no piano focus in its instruments-optimization settings, so the app is completely worthless to me as a pianist. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely precise
I purchased this app to help with sound checks on the venue pianos that my band leader plays. Most of the time we are at the mercy of whichever instrument the venue happens to own. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate and Sensitive
The app helps me accurately tune my acoustic and it is sensitive enough to easily pick up the tones from my guitar.

The tuner works great on my Kindle Fire. My complaint is that the version being sold by Amazon (v 1.0.5) is old. There is at least a version 1.0.9. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Works nicely
This app did better at tuning up my son's violin than the real tuner I bought. I was simply amazed on how easy and accurate the use was. Recommend totally.
