Just received this product for Christmas. Yes, both sides drip into the tray when open. Not as large a drip opening but does drain well.

The grease trap is designed to stick out a bit - like you can almost put an entire thumb in it - and supposedly that should also catch the top half when fully open... BUT I have to say, I use this almost daily and I never see "fat" in the tray. Maybe it gets burned off from the heat but comparing this to my old (unfortunately old and not removable plates) George Foreman grill, you can definitely see the grease drip off - same food. Could be the design/slope/angle of the plates.
