From the supplier: The less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carrier industry has experienced a great deal of upheaval since the deregulation of 1980. Of the 10 largest LTL carriers in 1979, only the top three survived to the present. In addition to bankruptcies and financial losses, mergers were a significant corporate strategy. Notable to the era after deregulation is the emergence of small, aggressive and non-union firms which have grown rapidly in recent years.
