I got one of the new rough finished Lodge cast iron pans. Food stuck to it until I honed it smooth with abrasives. Now it's great!

I think you are right in that they are trying to keep costs down. But they are already pretty cheap when compared to the "non-stick" pans you can buy now. You'd think there would be plenty of people who wouldn't mind paying the extra cost.

Yeah, the lodge are not super smooth, but with a proper seasoning I haven't had any problems with food sticking.

JUst got the same pan and have the same questions. Amazing how no one actually understood your question. I was looking for something smooth also. My old one which got lost in our move was sooooo smooth. Oh well.
