5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever on Afro-Cuban life, June 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Las criadas de La Habana / The Maids of Havana (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)
If you want to learn about the Black experience in Cuba then this book is a must for your library. It traces the life stories of two women: the first who left a small town to work as a maid in the big city of Havana, and the second who arrives in Cuba via the Mariel Boat Lift and realizes that finding work is next to impossible in the "land of the free." The book spans about 50 or more years, beginning in the 1940s until almost present time. Written in Spanish and full of cubanismos, touches lightly on almost every theme of Cuban life: Fidel's reign, santeria, racism, color/class system of life, social dynamic, etc. If you are looking for an excellent introduction to Afro-Cuban culture, make this your first book and your guide.
