What an excellent first novel! A little mystery, magic and adventure. The best part about this novel is the characters. I have read other fantasy books that just don't allow their characters to grow. There is quest but it is almost secondary to the interactions of his characters to one another and their environment.

The story is definitely influenced by authors like Tolkien and Robert Jordan, though Visser was able to only use them as a foundation. The story and world has evolved into something unique.

I highly recommend this book for lovers of fantasy. The only criticism of the book I have is that the first couple of chapters are a little rough in the writing. I think it is a result of being a first novel and also constructing the beginnings of his story without giving away the ending. This book is a must read.

I have read Jan Visser's short stories but this is the first novel of his I've read. This is a great story. It's a fantasy novel but with so much suspense, twists and descriptions of dramatic scenery and events, that many readers will enjoy it. If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, you'll like this book!

The Crystal Skulls is an adventurous quest with a terrific ending. The plot twists are fun, the bad guys are cool, and the story is engaging...a real page turner. The cast of characters is a great mix of personalities and the world they live in is even more interesting. I would recommend this book to any fan of fantasy and I look forward to the sequel!
