This product came out of Stanford University's Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability program. The design is elegant and simple, a refreshing change from the many over-engineered and difficult-to-use products we are subjected to in America today. The company's goal is to replace every kerosene lantern in the world with safer, brighter, and more affordable lighting, and this is a great product for that.

It's also a great product for use in American homes. Last winter we found ourselves in a rental ski resort condo without power for over 36 hours. The condo owners had not supplied the unit with candles or lanterns, and all the flashlights in our car had dead or dying batteries. After that experience, we vowed never to be so unprepared again. So we have bought and tested almost every solar and hand-crank flashlight and lantern on the market. The Kiran Solar LED Lantern has by far the best solar cell and is the most versatile product of anything we've tried. It doesn't require direct sunlight for charging, and unlike many other products, it doesn't get knocked over when sitting in a window sill.

This is a great little product. This lantern emits a lot of light, and it runs for a long time after charging in the sun. I've used it for days before it runs out and needs recharging. Small, compact size is handy for camping, etc. Amazing technology.

This is a brilliant design and thoughtfully executed. In one package, a light with its own charger. There's a small LED that shows when it's charging and a jack which I assume can be used to charge a cell phone from the Kiran battery. Genius!

The only negative about this light is it's NOT water resistant or water proof. You have to leave it outside in order to charge in sunlight but you'd better check the forcast for rain. Both of mine took on water inside the light and was a struggle to get the water out. Otherwise, it's a pretty good light for the price.

I would highly recommend this product. It is very portable / light and can be easily used indoors or outdoors.

At the same time, this device leaves much to be desired. There is supposed to be two settings of brightness, however, both settings give the same brightness, which is not enough for reading over a few minutes. Also, the solar panel cannot be removed for easy charging. I also have the Ikea solar light, which the panel can be removed. This makes it much easier to recharge. I just place it on my dash in my car everyday to recharge.

Bought two. Seem to work well on one all -day charge. I am puzzled at the Amazon price ($15 each), given that all over the web the prices is stated to be $10.00 each. However Amazon is the only place I could find where I could actually purchase them. Shall we cheer for capitalism?

I orginally ordered an S201 and was sent the Kiran. The process to return the incorrect item was going to be such a hassle that I decided to keep it. Later I learned it was a good decision. After charging for a full day on my back porch I decided to try the Kiran that night. Although it was not as brite as some of my other lanterns, I must admit that I was pleased with the illumination in a dark room. However, I was not able to distinguish between the high and low settings as they appeared to put out the same light. For the price, it is well worth the money and I will be buying one for each room in my house.

This is a great lantern to use during backpacking / camping, and works perfectly as a tent light for a two-person tent. I love how I don't have to worry about replacing batteries or fuel out in the wilderness. All it takes is setting the lantern out during the day, or strapping it to my pack, and I have all the light I need when darkness comes.

It also makes a great emergency light, as you can just leave it sitting in a window until you need it. The red LED on the back lets you know if its getting enough light, which is very convenient. Get this with a solar powered radio and a solar battery charger, and you will be better prepared when that next power outage comes.

I do alot of touring on a recumbent bicycle and I pull a two wheel trailer for all my camping items. After a night of camping I place the D-Light on the trailer to recharge and by the time I find a camp site it's charged for another 8 hours of light. I'm happy with this light and feel it a great companion for the dark camping nights, it's safe as I don't need candles any longer.
