About d. light

d. light is a for-profit social enterprise whose purpose is to create new freedoms for customers without access to reliable power so they can enjoy a brighter future. We design, manufacture and distribute solar light and power products throughout the developing world. We aim to empower the lives of at least 100 million people by 2020. In 2004, during d. light co-founder Sam Goldman’s Peace Corps service in Benin, Africa, his neighbor’s son was badly burned by an overturned kerosene lamp. This incident, along with the knowledge that 2.3 billion people in the world still do not have access to reliable electricity, inspired Sam to participate in a class called Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability at the Stanford Design School, where he met co-founder Ned Tozun. That’s where they developed their initial prototype solar lantern and an ambitious plan to bring safe, bright, and renewable lighting to people around the globe.

Solar and AC Charging

The portable solar panel includes a lengthy outdoor cable (4 meters) for convenient charging. The S300 can also be charged through a USB outlet using the cord supplied or a standard Nokia AC charger.

The light output is great. The brightest mode puts out a bright white light. I kept it on for 4 days using the nightlight mode and it was still running. 4 hours of brightest light, 8 hours bright light, 16 hours walking around light, 100 hours of nightlight mode.

Charging it kinda sucks because you need direct sun light. I tried charging it on semi cloudy Seattle weather and it failed to charge. I had to wait for a sunny day to actually see the charging light to show up. If it is cloudy, I take my 7 watt fold out solar panel charger + battery pack and use the USB to charge S300. I have the D.light S10 and S2 models and those charge with little sun light.

It is too big to put in a pocket, almost the size of 7 smart phones.

If you're looking for a durable, well made bright solar lantern/lamp then I recommend the d.light s300. It has a wide lighting range that is enough to light up a small room. The d.light can easily be charged via the solar panel or thru a usb. Under normal sun light the d.light took about 8 hours to charge using the solar panel. I was surprised that the ac outlet also took about 8 hours to charge initially. I suppose this was due to it having very little charge upon receiving the product. After fully charging it, I tested it to see how long the charge would last on the brightest setting and to my surprise it lasted more than 5 hours. Another plus I liked about the d.light was that it came with a multiple cell phone adapter.
I liked that this company also helps many people in third world countries that have no access to electricity. The only reason that I did not give this product a five star rating was because I noticed that the charge indicator lost one bar of charge within 10 minutes of use. Aside from this everything else worked fine. Reasonably priced.Once I accidentally dropped it and I thought I might have damaged it but when I checked it it worked perfectly fine without any external damage. Highly recommended.

The lantern works as described, and it is definitely a sturdy product. The four brightness settings provide a lot of extra value, in my opinion. The included USB cable allows you to use the lantern to charge cell phones and low power USB devices. This would be very handy on long hikes! The battery charge level indicator, 4 meter cable on the solar panel, and the easy-to-carry nature of the lantern are also very convenient. The handle is very ergonomic, and the top strap is useful in tents and so forth.

The cable may also be used to charge the lantern via AC. To do this, you plug the USB end into a Nokia AC charger or a USB power source. I charged it via AC, using my Motorola charger. I did some testing of how long the charge lasts on the brightest setting, which can light up a whole room. It does last a few hours on the brightest setting, as advertised. I then charged the lantern via the solar panel, which has a 4 meter cable for convenience.

I took the lantern off of AC for a few minutes so that I could test mobile phone charging, which worked. I'm happy so far, and it's only a matter of time before it pays for itself! I also hooked up my Kindle e-reader device to let it charge for a while, and it worked very well.

The four brightness settings:
High - 4 hours of light on a full charge
Medium - 8 hours
Low - 16 hours
Bed light - 100!!!

Of course, I really love the mission of the company behind the product. They are trying to get their devices in as many homes as possible in developing nations, especially areas that do not have electricity. This is helping to transform millions of lives for the better! The lanterns also help reduce carbon emissions, which is great for the environment! Lastly, d.light gives 10% of net proceeds of their sales in the USA towards providing solar lanterns to students without electricity.

I love d.light products. I have several lanterns and task lights and tell everyone about them. I was excited to add this to my little solar light collection, as it charges cell phones. I contacted them before purchasing to ensure it would charge smart phones, they said yes AND was assurred that I would still have juice left over for light.

I was surprised the solar panel was rather large and slightly heavy. I say this only because if this is something you'd buy with the intention of maybe using while hiking, it's kind of big for a pack. The light itself doesn't weight much at all but is big & clunky. If you're going to strictly buy for home use, then it's perfectly fine.

I charged it initially with the usb cord and an ac adapter till full. I tried the lights. Excellent! Bedside mode was a nice, soft light and to think it could last 100 hours in that light was awesome with options for 4, 8 & 16 hours of light at various brightness as well. It quickly charged by almost depleted phone to 88% within about 1 1/2 hours. I was impressed and excited. But then it didn't seem to do more than that. I tried the light. Dead. I charged it via the sun the next day. Again, full charge, nice light but not 100% for the phone. Pretty darn close but not 100%.

I returned it as it was unable to give me a full charge, not terribly portable and would not be able to provide light after charging my phone. It may work well for flip phones but unlike what they said to me (via their Facebook page) this will NOT fully charge a smartphone with juice left over for light. I'm bummed.
