Product Description

d.light S10 is a bright and durable replacement for flashlights, battery-powered lanterns, candles, and kerosene lanterns. It is 3 to 5 times brighter than a kerosene lantern, and is built to survive tough conditions, including accidental drops onto hard mud or concrete, rainshowers, and intense heat and dust. d.light S10 provides space lighting for the home, workplace, or while traveling. It also serves as a task light for studying, working or cooking. Its integrated solar panel removes the complication of installation and wires, its 2 brightness settings offer up to 8 hours of bright light, its dual solar and AC charging option allows charging even during rainy or cloudy days, and its multiple-setting handle provides maximum flexibility for any use situation.

UPDATE DEC 2015
Just ordered another S10 from I-Solar and discovered this Amazon product page has been hijacked by a Chinese rip off company. Product is clearly not made by d.light but is a blatant clone falsely claiming to be the original. The design has been changed in several ways but I won't know if they are for the better or worse for weeks or months. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT. The new improved version from d.light is here: d.light LED Solar Rechargeable #S20 Area Lantern. The S20 is a better product from the original manufacturer that is making a difference, not just a buck. Guess what, it's even cheaper (as of Dec 3, 2015).

ORIGINAL REVIEW
This new version is different than what was sold previously. The new one is red plastic and MUCH brighter. The 2 brightness levels are clearly different, unlike the prior blue version. Hard to believe it came from the same manufacturer.

It's intended to replace kerosene lamps in the developing world so that's what you should compare it to. Much brighter than a flame, not as bright as an incandescent bulb. But unlike anything we normally use, the power doesn't involve human intervention or control. And the on-going cost is zip.

Highly recommended for power failures and just for living green. I really like the idea of using sun power in the evening when I'm just hanging out. I will also hang one in the shower when I take one at night. The light is more than adequate and it doesn't mind moisture since it's designed for the tropics. It's light as a feather but built tough so a small child can carry it around easily. With up to 8 hours of light on low, makes for a nice bright night light.

This is my fourth S10 lantern.. These smaller lanterns are durable and compact enough to travel with. We use them in Nepal on travel where load shedding (rolling power outages) can last up to 18 hours a day. This gives us adequate light to function at night. Solar charging allows me to charge by day and use in the evening. The light is not super powerful but is enough to be usable. We carry it from room to room as needed when the power is out (frequently). The previous S10 lanterns I purchased were left behind as gifts to locals and ex-pats and to my knowledge are still working great and much appreciated. If you need a bigger more powerful light the Nova also by D.light should be considered. It has also performed very well for several years in the same circumstances.

These lights are really well built and are designed for use in the developing world. The light isn't amazing - don't expect it to light up a whole room - but it's very usable and would be great in a power outage or emergency.

If you want a charger for these, they use a standard Nokia phone charger which can be picked up cheap here on Amazon or elsewhere.

I live in Alaska and its dark most of the time. The cold is hard on batteries so I thought I would get the d.light S10 Solar Lantern for my bedroom and emergency use. This review is based on six (6) months of use.
I Love the idea but there are two major things wrong with this lantern:
1. It is very top heavy. The S10 Solar Lantern fall down/over at the slightest bump. Sooner or later it will break because of this. So you should hang it up to protect it.
2. The light output is OK when the batteries are charged at 80% to 100%. When the S10 Solar Lantern hits about 79% or less the light is barely seen. And this lantern takes a long time to charge and the charge doesn't last long.
Two stars are given especially for the short run time because you only get about 1 to 2 hours of bright light and maybe 3 hours of low, weak light. "8 hours of bright light" is a joke.

We are weaning ourselves from being grid dependent. Since we Are financially unable to outfit our homestead with a complete solar setup at this very moment. We are changing our energy consumption habits in free, easy ways. Thanks to d light we are able to do this with our lighting now!! We think these lights are super impressive. We leave them out all day from about 8am then bring them in when it gets dark. We hang them from hooks in the ceiling. Now you have to adjust to the white light they throw off...but we got over that real quick when we sat and thought about how we were enjoying Good FREE light :-). So far I have 6 of these and may get a few more :-). Having these lights is just one more inexpensive way to be more self sustainable. Given the current state of the world and our economy...we think that adopting a more natural approach to living is the way to go!

I ordered a couple of these and was so impressed, I put in another order to give as gifts to friends and family. I decided to unbox each gift lantern to give it an initial charge with the recommended Nokia charger. Unfortunately, many of the lanterns lit up when connected to the charger, indicating they had been left powered "on". None of these units would accept or hold a usable charge when compared to my original units.

Amazon was out of stock, so I had to send them back for a refund instead of an exchange. A few weeks later, the items re-appeared as non-Prime with overpriced shipping. A check back today showed that same shipping rate as well as a price increase in the product itself.

At the original price and with Prime shipping, these things were a great purchase. With the new price increase and inflated shipping, along with the QC issues on the latest batch, you're taking a gamble... which to me isn't worth it.
