It now refuses to charge either with the solar panel or plugged in.
Astromom
I would of given the d.light 5 stars for its functionality but can only give it 4 stars due to its cheaper construction.
Thomas Erickson
I would revise the review of the product, but not the customer service.

I live in an area that is remote and can have power outages that last for several weeks. However, the normal outage is for 3-8 hours during a storm. This llight is a perfect light for both situations. The "night light", which is the first brightness you cycle to is enough light to see in an emergency. It is rated at 100 hours. To test this, I left the light on level one, after fully charging it. It was on 12 hours from 8pm to 8am. I did a test immediately of the battery. It was still on 3 green flashes which translates to 4/5 full. I did it a second night and it was still at 4/5 full. I can assume from this that it will last easily the full 100 hours on minimal brighness.

On full bright, it is rated at 4 hours. This is too bright to look at for me. This would be good for searching for something in the dark. I will probably use it at brightness level #2 ( this lasts for 12 hours ). I am going to buy another and use for camping. Two lights will give enough light for wilderness camping and still allow it to charge up the next day off the grid.

The light comes apart easily with 4 screws and the internal battery is a NIMH 2A 1500mah 3.6 volt. It looks exactly like the many batteries that are available off the shelf at Radio Shack for house phones. It also has a plug type attachment to the circuit board so replacment can be done by anyone with zero electronic knowledge and a screw driver. Just take it apart and remove the battery and take with you so you can match the shape of the connector. It is a very common type and easy to match. The freshness stamp on the pattery was this year so I would expect a long life it you follow normal NIMH charging guidelines. Kudoos to the designers... if only Apple would do the same thing..

This is a fantastic light when it works. Had it for 5 months before it died. It's very lite and bright. I left mine with the solar charger plugged in. I took it camping and it was dead. I hardly used the light ( I turned it on once for about a minute)! It came with an AC charger and it charged the light with no problems. The AC charger and solar charger works on the S10 lights also. I contacted customer support and have not received a response.

Update 6-1-2011: I was able to reach customer support and they sent me a new one. I give them another two stars for that! They told me NOT to leave the solar panel plugged into the S250 for long periods of sunlight - over many weeks. Apparently the unit has no auto shut off capability when the battery is topped off and will kill your battery. Hopefully the newer models will resolve this problem. The battery in the unit is replaceable, if you're handy with tools.

We have used the D.light Nova rechargeable lantern for almost two years now, and it's great that it is now available on Amazon! My son has taken it on several five-day camping trips. He charges it before he goes, and he has never run out of light during the trip. We recently had a power outage, and as elegant as candles appear scattered around the house at night, they are not nearly as brilliant and convenient as our Nova lantern. It's also much more effective, and lasts longer, than a flashlight, especially if you want to illuminate a broader area. The D.light rechargeable lantern was designed for users in developing countries, but it is a great product for anyone who camps or experiences periodic power outages.

The light was GREAT, at first. Then months before the warranty ran out, it stopped working. I have no clue what's wrong with it. The down side to this light is that it's hard, almost impossible, to get customer service. I sent an e-mail about what to do since the light was still under warranty, no answer. Another e-mail, nothing. Then, remembered I bought it on Amazon, so I went to that site and wrote another e-mail.

Finally, about 6 days after the warranty ran out (they started it the DAY I ordered the light) I received some contact from the supplier. They later informed me the light was "out of warranty". I e-mailed again and tried to plead my case...was ultimately offered a slight discount on another light. Why would I want to buy another one that won't work for too long?

If you read other reviews, you will find the same thing. It's hard to get service if there is a problem. If you buy with that in mind, then ok. I even bought a phone charger designed to charge the light if the solar panel stopped working, it doesn't work either. Don't know what's wrong, but I just know I am not happy about my purchase.

UPDATE 2013: Even though the company was not helpful, I read in another review I might be able to replace the battery. I did that with a battery pack found here on Amazon for $8.99 and the light works again. It was fairly simple to take out a couple of screws and plug and play on the battery. I would revise the review of the product, but not the customer service.

I've had this light for about a month now and I am very happy with it. It does everything that the manufacturer says it will do. It will recharge (eventually) on sunlight alone and that stored energy can be used to charge your cell phone. Just the other day my cell phone was low and I used the mini USB adapter (provided with the light) and attached that to the phone charging cord and to my phone. It started charging right away. The next morning my phone was fully charged and the light's batteries (though low) were not empty. I have an emergency "crank" radio that will charge my phone (if I crank it until my arm falls off) Etón American Red Cross ARCFR600R Solarlink Digital AM/FM/SW/NOAA S.A.M.E. Weather Radio with Flashlight, Siren, Solar and CellPhone Charger (Red) but I prefer the D.LIGHT method. That morning, I took the light (and the provided solar panel charger) with me to work and put the panel on the dashboard of my car and hooked it up to the D.LIGHT. By the time I was ready to drive home the battery was about three quarters full, because of the shadow from the building covers my car until late morning, I estimate the solar panel had about 4-5 hours of usable light.

The D.LIGHT is very durable and sturdy. It has 4 brightness settings. The 1st brightest setting is useful for looking for something in the dark. The 2nd to brightest is quite sufficent to read by in the dark. The 3rd brightest setting is plenty of light to walk around outside in the dark. My daughter is still young and needs a "night light" so that she is not scared in the dark. The lowest brightness setting is perfect for that if we were to be without power at night.
