About d. light

d. light is a for-profit social enterprise whose purpose is to create new freedoms for customers without access to reliable power so they can enjoy a brighter future. We design, manufacture and distribute solar light and power products throughout the developing world. We aim to empower the lives of at least 100 million people by 2020. In 2004, during d. light co-founder Sam Goldman’s Peace Corps service in Benin, Africa, his neighbor’s son was badly burned by an overturned kerosene lamp. This incident, along with the knowledge that 2.3 billion people in the world still do not have access to reliable electricity, inspired Sam to participate in a class called Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability at the Stanford Design School, where he met co-founder Ned Tozun. That’s where they developed their initial prototype solar lantern and an ambitious plan to bring safe, bright, and renewable lighting to people around the globe.

Customer Reviews

This is very light weight, and puts off a good amount of light.
Jared A. Teeter
The light's not (nearly) as bright as standard indoor lighting, but it lights a room well enough for social uses and throws plenty of light for reading.
KS
I love the option to charge it via USB or through the solar panel.

I've had 4 of these for about a year. I never run out of uses for them or good things to say about them.
I keep two inside on a window sill. And I keep two outside in a location only slightly protected from the elements. I can't imagine that you could break these things under normal conditions outside. The only way I could see them "dying" is if they were submerged for a length of time.
One outdoor light will gather water once in awhile and I'll unscrew the plastic covering and empty the accumulation.
But it's just as bright and comes on just like the others.
These things serve their purpose fantastically. I could say that the brightness might not blow you away. but for one LED it certainly seems it should. It's plenty to provide adequate light to a normal sized room (15x15). Two could possibly destroy your retinas. I jest. But in the case of an extended power outage these could be a godsend. If used properly, it will provide plenty of light for reading, cooking, games, etc.
I've got larger solar panels that charge deep cycle batteries and power inverters. and also smaller automotive type battery packs for an assortment of power and lighting options but these get the most use and were probably the most "bang for my solar buck". I use them mainly for camping and they last the advertised amount of time if not longer. they are always ready to go the next night.
I've never charged them via AC but I might pick up an adapter so I can charge them from the larger solar bank should the sun fail to shine for a few weeks while the power is out.
I'd probably have bigger things to worry about if that was happening though.

I ordered this because I need a reading and seeing light by the bed, and I needed to cut back on extraneous wires and cables. Bought it, charged it on a windowsill, used it, loved it! Perfecto! It has two settings and both are adequate for my nighttime needs.

I must say, this is one of the better purchases I've made in a while. I actually have a pair of these lanterns. Obviously, these are eminently useful during power outages and such, but I actually find daily use for these. I havent used the USB charger for the light so I cant speak to that, but the solar charger works perfectly. I set it on a window sill before I leave for work. At night, when I go to bed, I collect them....I hang one over my daughters bed and set one on a shelf of my bedframe. The light is bright enough to illuminate my room...not full brightness, but bright enough to see, and more than enough light to read by...which is what I really use mine for. I'll read until I fall asleep, and the light isnt so bright that it keeps me up. When I get up in the morning (typically 6 hours later), the light is still on. I use the lower of the two settings, and having timed it, the charge does in fact last for 8 hours. I really cant recommend this enough. Works great! I'll probably buy a couple more personally.

This was an amazing light the first year I owned it. It charged nicely, was BRIGHT, and if you left it on, it output decreasing light all night long. It was perfect! I give its first year's performance 6 out of 5 stars it was so great.

I took it camping several times, and it performed brilliantly. Then I stored it in with my camping gear for about a year. I took it out for a recent camping trip, and it can't hold a charge. I charged it in the sun for days, and still the light fades in a matter of seconds once you turn it on. My lamp was not dropped, wetted, or traumatically abused in any way.

I opened it up and the battery pack has no visible damage (no bulging). It may work again if I replaced the internal rechargeable batteries, but they're heat-shrinked to their leads, so it would take a bit of hacking. I'll update if I replace the batteries.

I am very disappointed that this item was not a reliable long-term purchase. I think it kind-of defeats the purpose of being a solar-charged camping item if the entire unit needs to be replaced often, as opposed to an item where you just replace the batteries.

STOCK UP. We are in a very rural area and often are bothered by a power outages. I bought 2 of these and tested them out. They have a pretty decent light. I keep them in a windowsill to keep charged. They have a 3 way switch on top, low, high, off. The package says high will give you 4 hours of light, low will give you 8 hours. It one LED light, but it gives off a really powerful light. I include 2 PIC's with this review…1st on low, 2nd on high.

I bought this for last years 10 day camping trip. I was concerned our battery operated lanterns wouldn't last. This solar lanern worked great. I used it as a flashlight and lantern. It was great for trips to the bathroom and inside the tent. On the low setting it made a great night light for the kids. It's been almost a year, and it still works great. It's nice to have on hand when the powder goes out.

My son was reviewing solar lanterns for Boy Scout camping trips recently and this was one of four on which he wanted my opinion and my brother's opinion. We each independently chose this lantern based on reviews and features. THEN, I liked what I read so much that I decided to buy one for myself to use around the house as an emergency light and for reading at night when there is not a light nearby. The lantern can sit upright, be carried by its handle, or hang from its handle.

This lantern is very lightweight, sturdy, and simple. The light worked right out of the box. This gave me immediate confidence in the product that it would work after being in its own box inside a shipping box in the dark for however many days.

I would definitely recommend this to people looking for a simple, handy, reliable solar light.
