d3000 is the d3000 worthy of this lens? will it work well enough to merit the purchase?

My view...Get the best lens to work with your camera, even if your camera is an older model. The 10-24 will work fantastically fine with your D3000, as well as the D40, D40X, and D60, all of those being models previous to the D3000. Make sure to read the reviews though and I believe you'll find the 10-24 a perfect match for the D3000. I have a D90 and recently bought the 10-24. As of now, the 10-24 is actually worth more than a used D90. So it's not so much about the camera body. Invest in your lenses! Besides, you may want to upgrade your DX camera in the future to a D300S or a D7000 whereas the 10-24 would perform wonderfully with those bodies.
