Not the October Project of the past...,
By Fabricio (Brazil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: different eyes (Audio CD)
This album by October Project can be enjoyed by two kind of listeners. One, by the fans of October Projet's original formation, and other, by the usual pop music admirer.
For the fans in the first category, this work shall sound quite disappointing, specially because it does not bring the same greatness of their first two CDs. However, for the pop fan it is an OK work, with a smooth, enjoyable pop sound.

A Sweet Little Package,
By Simon Harrison "Simon" (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: different eyes (Audio CD)
It's hard to believe that it has been 13 years since October Project released their eponymously titled first CD. Perhaps the title of this EP suggests that the reconfigured line-up (singer Marina Belica is now lead vocalist) sees things differently than they once did. The compositions on this CD explore new ground, with lyrics sometimes more playful- especially in the song "forget you." Marina Belica's lead vocals are very satisfying to the ear and I can finally make out all of Flander's great lyrics without reading the liner notes. What remains the same is OP's commitment to great music. It's a sweet little package that leaves you hungry for more. Join the evolution!

october project: different eyes,
This review is from: different eyes (Audio CD)
This is a different band, essentially, without Mary Fahl's signature vocals, and four other musicians. Tolerable to listen to, but none of the mystical atmosphere of their earlier two albums, and little or no harmony. Disappointing.

A beautiful new direction,

October Project's "Different Eyes" keeps its focus on what the band is all about: intertwining carefully crafted language with subtly powerful harmony. Unlike efforts by other bands that have rearranged after a hiatus, "Different Eyes" shows that if a group's core focus is on producing great music, everything will fall into place. The sound is not so much a departure from their past work as it is a refocus on the band's musical purpose. And, as that founding members Adler, Flanders, and Belica remain the heart of the band, any OP fan--or anyone looking for a spiritual, distinguished experience--will love this album.

Amazing Album!,
This review is from: different eyes (Audio CD)
I have only just discovered October Project in the last year, and already the melodies and lyrics follow me everywhere. Art is made to touch the souls of its viewers - to allow them to find new meaning in their own experiences and memories - and that is exactly how Different Eyes has affected me. Julie Flanders' lyrics are transcendent and mind-awakening, and combined with Emil Adler's haunting compositions and Marina Belica's angelic vocals, they prove to us that beauty is everywhere in life - and that change is usually good.

edgier sound; just not the same,

i first heard october project while shopping in an alaskan department store in 1994; i fell in love with the sound. i have october project and falling farther in on both cd and cassette;they are both well used. the latest october project is a very simple project and has an edge to it, but does not recreate the melodic sounds heard in the previous two selections. no matter what they do there is so much talent it cannot be ignored, but if you are looking for the same sound you heard in years past, this is not the cd for you.i like it, but i can't honestly tell you why!

October Project past and present,
By Gray Ghost (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews

The haunting music of Emil Adler, the intriguing lyrics of Julie Flanders, the clear voice of Marina Belica--the crucial elements of October Project, past and present, can be found in "different eyes."
Songs like "The Mind's Eye," "When the Wind Blows," and "Long After Tommorrow" shows that October Project has retained an originality and freshness that sets the group apart. They do see the world through "different eyes." We should be thankful for that.

Great New Sound!,

I've been a fan of October Project since their first album in '93, so I was absolutely thrilled to see this new release! Different Eyes brings Marina to the lead, and her incredible voice adds a captivating new sound to the always inspiring songs of Julie and Emil. I would highly recommend this disc to any OP fan, old or new! It's a great compilation of new music. I thoroughly enjoy every song, especially the track, The Mind's Eye.

Mary Fahl-less,
This review is from: different eyes (Audio CD)
Mary Fahl is THE sound of the October Project (as is Donald Fagan the Steely Dan sound, Adam Duritz the Counting Crows sound, etc.), and, without her, they are, alas, just another band. Without Mary Fahl, October Project will never be as great as they were in their two Fahl-full albums. Mary Fahl gave them the transcendent, haunting, other-wordly sound that was so very seductive. Thank God she is a solo performer now, so one can continue to enjoy the original October Project sound. (Saw her at Tin Angel last night in Philly. She continues to be great. What a contralto voice!)
