Taken captive by her ancestral enemies, the hated British, beautiful Irish aristocrat Christina MacCarthy had only one route of escape: marriage to one of England's most powerful, dangerously handsome lords, the Duke of Dacre. 3.0 out of 5 stars Regency hero and heroine work for reforms in Ireland, January 15, 1998
By
Although the hero and heroine of "A Difficult Truce" exhibit the attributes of a romantic couple - they are aristocrats, physically attractive, charismatic, and in a conflicted relationship - I am reluctant to deem this a romance. The conflict in this book revolves around the struggle to bring the vote for Catholics to 19th C. Britain and land reform to Ireland. A greater part of the work is devoted to Christina's and Dacre's negotiations with the British cabinet and Irish revolutionaries to achieve these related ends. The conflict between the hero and heroine arises, in fact, out of their differing approaches to the problem. As always, Ms. Wolf's style is impeccable, but I had difficulty with her condensation of a struggle that lasted a century into a one or two year span. Readers who are not historical purists may not mind this, but the casual romance reader who picks up this Signet Regency may be surprised at the amount of space devoted to political manuevering.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of Wolf's best, April 14, 2010

I adored the romance between Charles and Christina, even though a good portion of the book deals with the Irish political issues. The political backdrop is more interesting than just the ton going to parties. Wolf fully develops their love, admiration, and respect for each other, which makes their political divide even more heart wrenching.
