Is there any way you can perform in-camera HDR without having to download images from the D300S to a computerized editing enhancement program?

No, unfortunately not. While "In Camera HDR" is the latest trend the D300s does not include this feature. It does however capture 9 images in a single bracket. That is; up to 9 images a maximum of 1 step or EV apart. These do have to be processed by an external HDR program though.
