This is an excellent book by a professional wood carver. As one other reviewer noted, it is not a step-by-step instruction guide but rather the author shows many of his early works, described the inspiration for those works, and does give details on how he created the difficult parts of the work. He also includes plans for each work that can be copied and enlarged should you wish to attempt the carving. There are a few easier pieces in the book but many are quite difficult. However these pieces will serve as inspirations and can also foster ideas of how you can modify them to make the work completely your own. I recommend this book highly. I also recommend the author's "Fundamentals of Figure Carving" for a more step-by-step approach for carving the human head and complete figure.

Ian Norbury is an absolute wonderful carver. The book is very concisely written and easy to follow. Being a fairly beginning carver there are a few things in the book that will be tried at a later date but I dearly love the book and all the inspiration it contains!

Written by a renowned British woodcarver with a definite European approach to design and artistic wood carvings. Probably for a carver with intermediate abilities, wonderful for inspiration at all levels.
