BEDTIME FOR BEAR features some great kid-friendly artwork by Brett Helquist, but I can't give this one more than an average rating because the story just wasn't special.

This isn't to say that children aren't going to want to have this read to them, just that I don't think it's worthy of the home bookshelves if you've got limited funds.

The story is that Bear wants to sleep, and his friends want to play in the first snow of the season. Bear goes out for a minute and soon gets swept up in play. He then goes to sleep.

Art is pretty good, but that's all I can really say about it. The text is pretty darn boring and extremely sparse - on too many pages there are just a few words, if that. Also, the juxtapositioning of descriptive text with character text makes for awkward reading. My daughter was into it for about a week (a painful week for me and my husband), and now it's abandoned. Just not enough catchy or clever text, or any rhythm or bounce to the text, to keep us coming back. Certainly NOT worth $17!!! I'd be disappointed had I paid $5.

I have three kids and while my 6 year old and almost 4 year old enjoy the book a lot, it is our 20 month old who loves it. She asks us to read the book every day before nap time and bedtime. It is true that there are not many words, but I think that works well for the younger crowd. The illustrations are beautiful and tons of fun and I still enjoy looking at them. Bottom line is I highly recommend this book for young children.

This is an adorable and fun read. My toddler loves it! The pictures are really beautiful and full of energy and action. I like that there's narration and speech bubbles, so you can read it in fun voices. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor.
