I've seen negative reviews for this book so I just had to write a positive one! As a 1st grade teacher, I LOVE this book and all of my students do too (we read it for the second time today). My class laughs throughout the whole story. It is a silly way of showing kids that life just isn't fair sometimes. I hear "It's not fair!" all the time in my class and this book just lets kids know that everyone feels that way. Great book! Can't wait to read more by this author!

One morning recently I was reading the newspaper when I heard my wife and 10-year-old son laughing. I thought they were reading a story from the paper together. Instead they were paging through 'It's Not Fair', flipping back and forth through the pages. So while it may be a book for younger children, I can attest to the fact that anyone of any age can enjoy it. Great message, fun book, from the prolific and always entertaining Tom Lichtenheld, and the equally talented Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

This book sends my 7-year-old and 3-year-old into giggle fits. Every kid has to deal with this feeling at some point. Some unfairnesses could be made right (like the unevenly split cookie at the beginning of the book) and some are just how life is (like the pig wishing it had wings). This book shows, rather than tells, how silly the "It's not fair" lament can get. It also shows that everyone gets a turn at being on the winning and losing end of "it's not fair."

My kids love this book...it's hilarious, imaginatively illustrated in a way that supports the text, and has a good message. The best thing about this fantastic book is that the message is offered with both humor and empathy. Of course, kids feel like things are unfair. That's normal. They need gentle guidance to see the whole picture and this book helps do just that.

People often are jealous of silly things (like the alien in the book who whines, "Why does she get all the eyes?"). There's a Yiddish expression that if you want someone else's lot, you have to take the whole package. If you had your friend's big house and dream vacation, you'd also have to live with her divorced parents and nasty big brother. You can always find an excuse to long for another's lot in life, but they are doing the very same thing to you. You might want your friend's toy, but he wants a bedroom he doesn't have to share like you have.

Even adults need to learn this "grass is always greener" lesson.

I expected a clearly stated moral at the end... Something to make it all okay.

But life is unfair and there won't always be something to come along and make it all okay.

Unlike others, I don't find the book funny - I find it to be very, very true, though.

My daughter has every reason to say "not fair." She's a congenital double amputee and there's nothing that will ever make that okay, make it fair, make her like everyone else. That's how I see this book. It's a cute way of saying, "You know what, kids? You're right. Things aren't fair. And yet life goes on. The end."

Every day we deal with fairness and unfairness, how those situations span out is determined on our attitude. Regardless of the matter, our attitudes are seen by many around us, including children. They mock and want to follow certain attitudes that they see from people around them. Right and wrong mentalities are picked up from the young minds and their mind sets change within the situation and may become either negative or positive.
Fairness is often determined on what we have compared to what someone else has. In this book, It's Not Fair, fairness is shown through problems that could be solved and things that happen in life that are unsolvable. The cookie being split is an easy fix but the pigs having wings is physically incapable. It is based on small children so it appeals to younger ages. It also shows that everyone in the book gets something fair and unfair, not everyone gets one or the other.
As a sister and future teacher, I bought this book because of the title. Now that I know the content of the book, I'm please with my purchase and would not trade or give ti away. I will definitely keep this book around my classroom and family for a long time considering the theme and message behind it.
Every night my little brother loves to read and for the past week and a half he has chose to read It's Not Fair. He gets a giggle and a, "Yeah, that's not fair at all," every couple pages! This book is really a relating type of book for kids. Parents, teachers, and siblings would enjoy a read like this. Something you can talk about, mention, or refer to with a child. Also, another plus that the book has is the rhyming scheme. It puts that extra mile on the work of the book and the interest in children.

First, I agree with reviewers who say that this is not Amy Krouse Rosenthal's best. However, it is still a cute book. We got it from the library, and my four-year-old son wanted it read to him several times a day for the first week and at least once a day every day thereafter for the last couple weeks. My eight-year-old son often reads on his own when we're reading picture books, but will come and listen to this one more often than not. Previously, "It's not fair!" was one of my little one's favorite sayings. I don't seem to hear it as often lately. Maybe the book helped?
