And to think that I thought book one was amazing. Book two was absolutely marvelous! Set in beautiful Paris, Dennard found ways to make this novel dark and compelling and impossible to put down! Now, let me go get on my knees and grovel for book three.

What continuously impresses me is Dennard's writing style. She puts such great emphasis on detail that I felt as if I was actually transported to Paris. I've never been to Paris, but I can certainly say I am dying to go. She was also able to drill the importance of etiquette during this time period into the readers, as made evident by Daniel's struggle with speaking using words that were never before in his vocabulary. It was rather entertaining, watching him catch his words because he reverts back to his usual self around Eleanor since they always bring out the best in each other. Both the writing and the historical aspect of this novel were spot on.

And then there's Eleanor. I really enjoyed how she grew. Doubly stubborn and ten times more assertive, she's even more sassy and witty, though committed and loyal. I loved her downright rebellious nature that began with her refusal to wear corsets ever again. But see, she's battling a darkness inside her, one that's both strange and entirely lovely and it's turning her world upside down. This internal battle between right and wrong, what she wants and what other wants, expectation versus reality was rather enticing and I enjoyed it immensely.

The other characters were amazing as always and now wear some battle wounds. And, somehow in some unbelievable way, Daniel became even more perfect, but what I really enjoyed was the emergence of a new character: Oliver.

This cover is fabulous. Mainly because of the placement of her right arm. For those who read Something Strange and Deadly know how perfect this is and for those who haven't read it, trust us - it's perfect (and you should probably go pick up the book). Plus, I love the dress and the colors. Not so much for Eleanor, per say, in the story but just in general; I really like it.

Now that I have the cover out of the way, what's in between those precious covers is loads better, much better. Eleanor is getting over everything that happened to her in the previous book including losing her right hand, her brother and the man she was set to marry plus her mother is not well, mentally and she's still coping with the fact that Daniel told her he didn't love her. This is a lot for one person to be dealing with plus add on the fact that your families name is no longer what it once was and most people in town shun you. Not a good time for Miss Fitt.

Every person goes through a fade of who they can trust and who they can't. Every person always makes a mistake. Sometimes it can ruin a relationship or sometimes it can make it stronger. The question is, how do you ever know which outcome will come from keeping secrets? Some secrets are not told because you're not sure who to trust, you're not sure how someone might react. I find Eleanor's troubles to be very relatable, no matter the age of the reader. There's so much she is keeping to herself and lying to others that she gets to a point where she just explodes. When we get to that point, I applaud her for how she handled it and I'm glaring at you, Spirit Hunters, for how you handled it.

Everyone who read Something Strange and Deadly fell in love with Mr. Daniel Sheridan. Don't try and deny it; you did.

I am utterly heartbroken for not enjoying this one as much as I did the first book. The plot came to a complete standstill and nothing important actually happens. SIGNIFICANT chunk is spent on reading and discussing mythology, demonology and explaining how and when. I hope you like lessons instead of action, because that's what you get in this book. Eleanor follows the Spirit Hunters to Paris, by getting on a boat where she meets Oliver, a demon with mysterious motivations. He was kind of unpredictable and I was never sure what his real motivations were. I enjoyed him quite a lot. Eleanor remains spunky and sarcastic but still kind of ignorant. Her newly discovered necromancy and magic are creating an inner conflict that came of little bipolar. The transition between her thoughts and feelings didn't feel smooth or honest. Lots of new characters are introduced but none of them seemed important enough for me to care, while the characters we grew to love such as Daniel, Joseph and Jie take backseats and nothing about them really changes or develops. Daniel does not make an appearance till page 200. I wish I was exaggerating.

The romance is still non-existent, which is fine because I like my sexual tension stretched out especially when you have two very strong willed people, but what I didn't like is the angst. Eleanor and Daniel's issues could be solved by a SIMPLE conversation but I guess it wouldn't be YA fiction without teenage angst that takes away from the chemistry and that fun tension they had in the first book. I was really disappointed.

(Mild spoiler, nothing big or revealing to the overall plot:
Large chunk of the book talks of an upcoming ball, Parisian Ball during Victorian era - what could be better?
