Duke hopped out of the red Dig Dogs pickup and waved his blueprints in the air. Work, work, work! “Get moving, crew. / We’re heading downtown. / an old building there / needs to come down.” Buddy loaded up the wrecking crane on the flatbed while Max raced with a wheelbarrow loaded with orange safety cones. Watch out, there’s a job to be done! Caution, do not enter, it’s a job for dogs. There’s a ramshackle old building waiting to come down. Buddy’s taking aim with that big wrecking ball. It’s starts to tremble then starts to swing. Can Buddy get that building down with a couple of whacks?

“With a BOOM the ball / sails right through the wall. / Stand clear now-- / the building is starting to fall.” Roxy looks over at a job well done, but there’s still lots of work to do. Spike’s moving in that dozer to move that rubble while Max loads it into the dump truck. Move it, move it, move it! Duke is shouting out directions to his crew of dogs. Time for a snack when the Hot Diggity Dog van pulls up. What’ll you have? Will it be a hot dog, corn dog, or maybe even that veggie dog? Back to work because another building has got to come up. The rebar has been laid and the concrete mixers are on the site. Will those dogs be able to get that building up on time?

A perfect ‘tail’ for the youngster who digs dogs and construction. This is the sequel to “Dig Dogs, Dig: A Construction Tail”. No doubt everyone will be anxiously awaiting each and every tale in the series. This book is a hit with the 2 year old boy in my house. He loves this book as well as Dig Dogs Dig. I highly recommend James Horvath's books - the illustrations are cute too. You can even ask your toddler to find Jinx in each one!

After reading "Dig Dogs Dig" I looked forward to the second book in the series and was delighted to find that this book is even better than the first. There is much to like about Build, Dogs, Build. The rhyme and graphics make good clues for young readers. Large, expansive, colorful graphics are loads of fun and add to the total impact of the book. Mostly in vivid, intense primary colors, the graphics can be used to initiate observation and memory and to teach colors and counting to the youngest readers.
I also like the word play and sight gags here, treats for the observant readers.

Build, Dogs, Build is a wonderful book for adult and child to enjoy and revisit together.

‘Build, Dogs, Build’ written and illustrated by James Horvath is author’s second imaginatively made picture book about a team of working dogs which this time are destroying the old to build the new building.

James Horvath once again uses old acquaintances Roxy, Buddy, Max, Spot and Spike who together with their foreman Duke will use cranes, bulldozers, dump trucks and cement mixers to do their perfect construction work.
There is so much work to do, so the only question is whether all will be on time, will all their work be finished as planned so dogs can take well-deserved rest before moving into new work adventures…

James Horvath for the second time produces 40 pages of entertaining picture book full of vivid illustrations of dogs crew adventures (and one cute black cat that is always hiding somewhere in pictures) while on the construction site they together replacing the old house with a new and modern one.
His book is full of humor both due the rhyming text and funny pictures that show our heroes in action.

As well as its prequel, besides being fun and entertaining, Horvath’s book carries some nice lessons for young readers such as the importance of teamwork, adherence to the agreement, not giving up because of the difficulties, and others that increase the educational value of this book.

Therefore due to its presentation and content ‘Build, Dogs, Build’ is a book best suited for children aged 4-7 years, with which children will have lot of fun and be able to learn a lot of useful things about life; the book that you will fall in love with when for the first time together with your child you’ll reach its end, and then will together decide to read it again…

I absolutely love these books. They are brightly illustrated and have fun rhymes that describe what goes on in construction. I used to work in construction before becoming a SAHM, so these books are a fun way to show my kids what I used to do when I was working. My kids really like the books, too (they are preschool/kinder age), and they really like looking at all the different pieces of construction equipment, learning what they do, and they like that the story is made up of dogs (including one female dog, which I also like).
