My granddaughter (age 7) and I went to see the movie "Frozen", her second viewing, her choice. She had seen it and even though she knows grandma always waits to see all the credits, she held my arm to say we had to stay (she knew there was an addendum toward the end of the credits (we were the only ones left in the theater when it came on). At the end of the credits was the statement that this movie was based on the story, The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson. I went home and immediately went to Amazon and ordered the book. When she opened it on Christmas morning and I told her of the connection to our movie, she was pleased. She is an avid reader and is reading two grades above her grade level. Santa brought her several books besides this one. She was excited!

This "Snow Queen" book is a concise edited version with fabulous drawings that illustrate the adventures of Gerda as she searches for her friend Kai. I was compelled to reread "Snow Queen" after seeing Disney's "Frozen" and this was the perfect edition for me. It's actually subtitled "A Retelling" of the Hans Christian Andersen tale because it's condensed from the original. Despite its brevity, it captures all the main elements of the classic story. The best feature of this handsome hardcover is the colorful and imaginative illustrations by Bagram Ibatoulline: the wicked troll whose mirror blinds Kai and freezes his heart; the old woman, the crow, the prince and princess, and the robber girl who help Gerda in her quest; the northern lights that guide the way to the Snow Queen; and the Snow Queen herself. The book is aimed at kids ages 4-8 but I don't see why anyone of any age couldn't enjoy it. I'm middle-aged and it's a lovely addition to my book collection.

I purchased this book because I have not read it in so long. It is still a great book. One of my favorites! If anyone wanting to purchase this because of the movie "Frozen" from Disney, make sure you tell your kids that it is the original story and it has nothing to do with the movie.

This a truly beautiful story about how true love can conquer everything. In this story, the girl is not the damsel in distress but, the hero. The story art is very fitting. The masterfully written story does not need illustrations but, the addition is beautiful. This is my absolute favorite love story.

I had seen that Frozen was based on this book. While it is very different in the story line from Frozen, it is a good book although a little scary for a 4 year old.

a story split into several (six? seven?) parts covering the relationship between a boy and a girl, from different families but who are neighbors and best friends. The boy is kidnapped by a Snow Queen; the girl embarks on a journey to find him and bring him home.

Like many original fairy tales, the story is full of sadness, darkness, warnings for children. This story also sort of doesn't make sense. To me. At all. Sorry for the incomplete phrases, but for emphasis, let me repeat: I did not get it. Since I could not logically link up the stories, nor find explanations for random plot keys like the girl's seemingly divine powers over evil, I could not really explain this book to my children.

I definitely do not recommend. Or else, whoever does get this book, please, send me a note of erudition or a link where I could education myself.

I bought this for my granddaughter *who bears more than a passing resemblance to the little sandy blonde heroine of the story as imagined by the illustrator, though I had no way of knowing that before the purchase.* It's a charming story about platonic love & friendship, perseverance, & following what one knows to be true in one's heart even though things seem to be beyond hope. But what really wowed me is the quality of the illustrations--beautiful & expert. It's a gift I'm proud to give, & I'll have to check out others by the same illustrator, Bagram Ibatoulinne-- they are that stunning & perfectly capture the essence of the story; the work of a very talented person.

I believe the book is out of print now as I had a hard time locating it. Get it now if you're on the fence or are building a collection of beautifully illustrated classic fairy tales! You won't be sorry.
