It's hard to find disinterested reviews of boats. The authors seem to find the good points [and almost any boat has some] to write about, leaving you to figure out what the bad points are by exclusion.

Any boat is a compromise, and designed to do one sort of job really well. The trick in selecting the right boat for your purposes is accurately listing just what it is that you want the boat to do. This book is predicated on the idea that you want a boat to take several people in comfort and safety for several days or longer through potentially challenging waters -- the coast of British Columbia, for example.

If that's the case, this may be your book. It discusses each of the many systems on board and suggests which alternatives are most likely to meet your needs. I learned a lot from it when we were looking at trawlers last year -- and would recommend it without reservation to someone in a similar position.

If you're brand new to boats and the only thing you know about them is that they're suppose to float, then you're gonna need a book like this one to help give you a good foundation on the systems, parts, and many little things that a good boater should know. I found the pics, diagrams, and general information quite helpful.

Really enjoyed reading this book. The material covered in it is quite thorough, and really does give you great insight into what it takes to get started. I'm looking to become a full-time liveaboard on a power boat, and found this book to be extremely helpful in terms of understanding what I need to accomplish this.

This is a very well written and comprehensive book on coastal power boat cruising. It is fun to read because it is well written and not intended to go into extensive technical depth on any subject. Everything is covered from selecting a proper cruiser to anchoring, to turning a single screw boat even to selecting a turkey based on the height of the oven. It is written from the vantage point of a seasoned cruiser giving friendly advice to a novice so some information is detailed some is less so. Some is basic like knot tying, some is more complex like backing into a slip with a single screw boat with the wind and tide, etc. - sort of like learning golf over the phone! There are even recipes that cruising cooks can make!
No this book is not everything but it is an excellent introduction and I would recommend it even over Sorensen's or Stapleton's or even the Beebe classic - simply because it is more readable, more comprehensive and less complex. What would I wish for, probably more information on cruising the Puget Sound/BC area. But there are other books on that.

If you're new to boating/cruising you will probably get a lot more from this book than I did. That said, it's well-written and contains most of the basic information that will get you started. Or get you stopped. The authors don't try to sugar-coat boating and you should take their warnings/caveats seriously (even though some are humorously presented). The cruising life is a wonderful way to live, but not for everyone. For some, it can be a nightmare. This book should give you a pretty good idea of where you fit, if you keep an open mind.

If you are just starting out, you will find this book to be very informative and full of ideas to perplex before making the plunge and done as a good read. However, if you are like me and buy just about anything about boats and have some experience with them, you find this book to be a reminder of things probably forgotten, but enjoyable nonetheless.

This book, although an informational, reference book, is hard to put down! It is one of those books that is a "must have" and should be on every boat owners book shelf.

Comprehensive review of powerboats and their care and feeding. My wife and I are considering purchasing our first boat, and Gene's book has really helped us to know what to ask and what to expect once we pull the trigger! Great job.
