Second Chances is inspiring and extremely readable. It is a real page turner and while one can quickly read it, the stories give the reader pause. The rollercoaster journeys of the executives' lives, the shocking depths and over-achieving heights are thought provoking to say the least. Having barely digested those, the astounding recoveries are actually far more dramatic. To read story after story of individuals reaching spiritual serenity and mental comfort after such travails gives the reader hope that those goals are truly within reach for everyone willing to do the work needed. The obvious gratitude, humility, joy in being of service and living in the moment of these recovered business people is absolutely inspiring. In fact, their sense of gratitude seems to be contagious, I am delighted to have had the opportunity to have read the book and hopefully learn from their both good and bad examples. I strongly recommend this book.

Between The Big Book and A New Pair of Glasses, this ranks with them for me.Just shows me that there is HOPE and changes can be made if you go to any length to do it.The Foreword by Rick Moody starts the read off in the right direction. Thanks--Good Day to be Sober.

Quick read; it outlines the struggles of successful individuals and how they struggle with substance abuse (mostly alcohol). Most of abusers sought freedom through AA and the closeness of family and friends.

Some addicts and alcoholics seem to "fall forward" in life. I believe that's because, at first anyway, the drugs and alcohol work; they do what we want them to do. They give energy, boost creativity, and uninhibit us so that we don't notice the fears and insecurity that would otherwise restrain us from taking the chances that are sometimes necessary to be successful. Drugs and alcohol can propel us to the top of the mountain, but then they proceed to drive us right off the other side of the cliff. That's what happened to Peter Jaquith. Fueled by alcohol, he became a Wall Street millionaire, and started smoking crack at 57, and quickly found himself homeless and penniless. His story, and many others who made it to the top of the mountain in their careers, are found in "Second Chances" by Gary Stromberg and Jane Merrill.

There are stories by Michael Deaver, deputy chief of staff under Ronald Reagan; Andrew Zimmern, celebrity chef and TV personality; Walter Yetnikoff, former president of CBS Records, and many more. In particular, I really enjoyed, and gained much insight from Wiktor Osiatynski's story. He's an internationally renowned legal scholar, and he says we addicts and alcoholics have five problem areas in our life that we must address: the problem of self-image, of ego and ambition; the problem of how we relate to God and spirituality; the problem of how we relate to other people; the problem of our fears; and the problem of what gives sense and meaning to our life.

Just like "The Harder They Fall", also by Stromberg and Merrill, "Second Chances" is the equivalent of a hundred recovery meetings all in one book. It's chock full of honesty, courage, and remarkable insight, and it's a must-read for all recovering addicts and alcoholics.

Bought this book when I was going through CD treatment. The stories are inspiring and made me realize that addiction can happen to anyone. There is hope...you can get through it and go on to a meaningful, productive life! It's nice to read about higher profile people who have dealt with it. The book is well organized and an easy read. I would highly recommend this book.

Second Chance is a collection of 16 stories of people who were trapped in addictive behavior but made successful recoveries. For the most part, these people were highly successful, some even household names. But fame and fortune does not protect a person from becoming an addict.

A large number of these became addicted quite early in life, starting on the path as early as grade school or high school. The stories are brutally honest. It can be painful to read about how so many of them had so much, thought it would not, could not happen to them. It seems that one trait they all had in common was the ability to deny there was a problem. Many lost fortunes, suffered broken marriages and often they resorted to crimes to support their habits.

There are some very valuable lessons to learn from this book:

It can happen to anyone - it does not matter how well educated, how successful in business - it is much easier to fall into the trap than to get out.

Almost all cases the person denies they have a problem until they are very deep in trouble. And the very first step to recovery is admitting - honestly facing up to the problem.

There is a huge difference between drying out and being sober. Being sober is more a state of mind - it is actually wanting to be free of the addiction.

The 12 step program will work if someone really puts their mind to it, finds a sponsor and attends the meetings. It seems that those who fail to attend the meetings are much more likely to fall back into the bad habits.

This book will probably not serve to deter anyone on the road to destruction since one of the characteristics seems to be denial. For someone wanting to break the chains of addiction, it should serve as an inspiration.
