Sam Alapati is a grand-master in his own realm; He has done it again; Yet, another feather in his accolade-filled hat!

Ranging from Comprehensive Concepts Overview, Installation, Administration, Configuration, Setting up the environment, HA/Clusters, Security, Performance Tuning, Tech. Deep Dive & a whole lot more, this book covers ALL/relevant areas of administration.

I would recommend this book as a MUST-READ for the Weblogic Administrator to learn for-the-first-time, as well as enhance & improve their existing skills.

Since the ten years or so that I have known & interacted with Sam R. Alapati, I think I wouldn't be bragging at all if I said, 'Sam is the SysAdmin of SysAdmins'! An expert author with a practical approach to writing, Sam Alapati has once again demonstrated that system administration is a dedicated task (immaterial of the type of systems in context) that commands hands-on practice all through to perfection. Be it SysAdmin of the mainframes and the many CLI of the legacy era; the UNIX/MS-DOS SysAdmins and the ubiquitous shell scripts and the-power-of-the-dos-shell; the intuitive GUIs of yesterday's and today's Windows and Windows-enabled environments; or the trending and Next-Gen Grid Consoles that service 'loads of Server Administration' from a (remotely, if needed) centralized control, a SysAdmin is the brain behind them all and a carefully maneuvered design-by-dissection of the critical functionality of the same into Installation, Configuration, Management & Security. Sam's treatment of the scope and content-in-context of Oracle WebLogic Server11g has just done the same - in fact something more in terms of

(a) Distilling the facts in a precise, concise, and decisive manner. All three aspects are important when working hands-on during installation and beyond!
(b) Emphasizing on the (Concept, Implement, Customize) approach rather than running into pages of cross-reference documentation.

Tough, collaterals there are certainly on the same from Oracle sources, his way of writing has a command line of its own. I can draw from scores of examples from Sam's previous books as also from his latest breed, here are my final few `dollars and sense':

and did a good job of describing the various aspects of the Weblogic server. Since I do not always have access to online information regarding Weblogic I wanted a book that I could use for reference. Weblogic is not the easiest application to administer. But this book does answer a lot of questions that come up. This book assumes that you have some experience with either Windows, UNIX and some sort of web server.

This is book is quite bad and I would highly recommend looking for other sources of information. Honestly, the manuals that you can download with the product are better off.

One of the major failings of this book is its very poor organization. It dumps upon the reader a great deal of information about the internals of weblogic server system before even getting to points about install or startup of the servers. It would have been far better to start with little pieces and then pull away the additional layers as one progressed through the book to understand all the parts.

Also the author repeats themselves a great deal, often explaining the same details again in another chapter that were covered in the previous chapter. It reads like he is fully expecting people to just read a section and skip everything else.

Another problem that really tells you the author doesn't really work as an administrator of the server is how much he dumps useless programming information into a book about administration. The details of how to use the java classes in programs should be left to the programming with Weblogic books and not stuffed into a book about administrating it.
