5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have! The Greatest resource for statistics for Engineers and Scientists, August 28, 2006
By Merlynik Statistics (Lakewood, Colorado USA) - See all my reviews
I hold a BS in Math and I'm completeing a MS in Applied Statistics. If I had this textbook prior to completing my course work I could have replaced three or four and maybe five other books with Dr. Navidi's work. This is with out question the best single source for basic statistics you can find for an engineer, scientist or anyone else that is more concerned with the use of the statistics than the mathematical background.

If you are looking for a basic intro book for a stats major this would be okay, it is the PERFECT BOOK for the intro to applied statistics course. There is more info in this book than can be covered in one semester but is easy to read and can be used for years and years as the resource for statistics.

Simple and easy to read, use and full of real world examples. A better statistics book does not exist.

3.0 out of 5 stars good introductory textbook, April 15, 2008
This book is intended for those who are more concerned with using statstical methods (on someone's experimental data, for instance) than with a detailed exposition and foundation of the principles. This book is very succinct (formulae are highlighted and easy to find) and concepts are easily accessible (i.e., easy to read). It is full of examples, many of them from existing academic references. Having taken my last course on statstics over 10 years ago, this book is definitely a much less painful refresher than my old textbook. The headings sum up very nicely all the important ideas, and this makes learning (and relearning) very easy.

There are, unfortunately, a number of things that bug me about this book, and I suppose they are consequences to making the information accessible. First, is that there are many instances that formalism is abandoned in favour of continuity. The presentation of Poisson's distribution as an extension of the binomial distribution, for example, is conceptually incorrect. There also many places where proofs are not supplied but, in the mean time, the mathematical complexity for these proofs might have been overwhelming for the intended readership. I also find that, the discussions on confidence intervals and hypothesis testing could have been made much simpler. The Central Limit Theorem can be used more generously in these sections to simplify these sections. Finally, I also find that the questions can be more conceptually challenging.

Pros:
(1) Book is very well written and concepts easily understood
(2) There are plenty of examples to illustrate said concepts
(3) Information is easily accessible and is very practical

Cons:
(1) Formalism heavily sacrificed in favour of continuity
(2) Some concepts can be presented more effectively (i.e. less pages)
(3) End-of-chapter questions can be moe challenging

This is a very effective undergraduate textbook on this topic. However, at this point, I am still not very satisfied with the information presented, and had to dig up places to understand further the concepts that are presented within. But that's all part of an education, isn't it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Shape, November 7, 2009

The book itself is in excellent condition with only an occasional hand-written comment throughout the pages. The instructional DVD with example programs was missing.
