I work as a tech in a medical ICU and will be working there when I graduate from nursing school. After perusing many other critical care books, this one covered the most real-world topics that you'll see right off the bat when you get into a MICU. I'm not saying other books aren't great, but for a starter book I think this is an excellent choice.
Example topics like Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS) and liver failure related to Tylenol overdose are not covered in most other books, if at all, but they are well explained here. I also love the meds sections. Under the appropriate topics, medications are listed and are often named (not just a class of meds). For example, in the dysrhythmia chapter there are in-depth descriptions of Amiodarone, Procainamide, Lidocaine and magnesium - the desired effects, nursing responsibilities and side effects. Fantastic!... not just another umbrella explanation to use an "anti-dysrhythmic" drug.
To top it off, the book doesn't seem too much like a textbook. It is easier to read; I think of it more as a manual. Highly recommend!

As a critical care RN for almost 30 years in the field I now teach nursing (and work as a flight RN). I got this text teaching critical rotations for an accelerated BSN basic nursing program. It's their primary source for their lectures and clinical.

I found it really, really easy to read, comprehensive, and a great review for even seasoned RNs. I often carry it with me when teaching the basic and intermediate med/surg courses as well as it's a great reference for me and my students, even if they're not at that level yet, (e.g., how BUN and creatinine are indicative of fluid volume status and which is more specific for acute renal failure). I rarely read books cover to cover, but this was awesome and I did read it cover to cover. I highly recommend it.

This book is required for one of my nursing courses. Honestly, I learned more by just listening to lecture and studing my NCLEX book. If your instructor tells you the book is optional, save yourself the money and invest in a good NCLEX book instead!

Besides being required this text was a nice surprise. Its readable, technical and of an appropriate scope to the subject. I feel like my readings were time well spent rather than reinforcing my need to look to other sources.

Too often I have to buy books that are compliments by the authors to themselves in their overwhelming detail and included information. Just send me a resume to ignore, let the text be a useful tool.

Kudos for being paperback. No need for this to be a coffee table book with clay-finish papers and a hard cover sporting a pertinant photograph; I just need the info, not to be baffled by the presentation.

I thought this book wasn't detailed enough for critical care. It's good for a critical care baseline but lacks the needed information and details of harder concepts. Our teacher thought so too because she used a lot of supplemental things in class.

This book leaves much to the reader to research on your own. You better have your med/surge information memorized. I needed to keep referring to my old books when I needed to know more about a process.

The information is to the point. Explains complex issues well and there are also questions and a good review section. This book is also an easy read.

This book can be a bit dry but overall it is very informative. I learned a lot from this book and I think it has pretty good explanations!
