Just finished reading Liz Blazer's book and I have to say it's really, really great. What is particularly wonderful about it is its concise presentation of the most critical aspects of creating animated works—delivered in a style that is clear, fun, 'contemporary,' and, yes, compassionate.

While it is not a 'deep' look at any one of the aspects of film (one will not find an analysis of Bergson, Albers, Mulvey nor Campbell in here) it is indeed comprehensive and therein lies its strength. Blazer presents a lot of information in the simplest and most direct way...the mark of great design.

I will be making this required reading for my animation students.

On first appearances, this book looks as though it will skimp on the details. This is far from the truth, the way in which Liz Blazer has cleverly written this book doesn't 'spoon feed' you with content, but instead Liz imparts her knowledge and industry techniques. She gets you to think about the reasons why you are creating an animation, and then asks all the questions to allow you to explore all the avenues that will take your animations to the next level.

This book is the perfect length for giving a thorough understanding of the animation process for storytelling. The way in which Liz has written the book is informative clear and does not dwell on technical jargon. Instead, she imparts her knowledge in a clear, concise way, and all through the book works towards the creation of an animated story. On completion of reading this book, you will have a competently animated story. I still use this book as a workflow to ensure my animated stories consistently retain their fluidity and are always creative in approach.

When producing animation, there is a clearly defined route that sometimes is easy to try and shortcut. Reading and working through this book shows the reasons why the route is there, and by shortcutting this path will lead to incomplete and incoherent animations. This book has taken me from producing animations that are sometimes disjointed, into creating animations that have a clear defined structure and all elements complement each other in a subtle way so that the viewer is not confused and can enjoy the content, and the animation produced.

If you a novice or fairly new to animation and want to learn the structure, and how to think about the process of animation then this book is invaluable to you.

Animated Storytelling is a concisely written and beautifully deigned book that gives the reader a comprehensive look at the filmmaking process. It's kind of like having a mini film school in the palm of your hand! (Although it focuses on animation, I would argue that much of this book's information applies to live-action storytelling as well.) For the aspiring filmmaker, it serves as a workbook, taking the reader through the entire filmmaking process with pertinent and contemporary illustrations of the concepts being discussed as well as assignments that help the reader put those concepts to use in their own film. For the veteran, it serves as a great reference guide and creative-block-lifter: encouraging the reader to experiment and not be afraid of failure while reminding them of key techniques and concepts that can help elevate their work to a whole new level.

As a side note, I believe this book would be a great educational companion piece to Richard Williams' "The Animator's Survival Kit" (see link below). As Williams' book delves into the nitty gritty and hard core mechanics of character animation, Blazer's book shows the reader how to combine that animation with design and storytelling to create a film. A great combo for any aspiring animated filmmaker!

I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up Animated Storytelling. I knew there was a shortage of books that talk about the workflow of animation, perhaps the principles of the art. I’ve been familiar with Pearson’s educational books for quite some time, and I’ve always found them well worded. When I read through this, this was no exception.

You see, there’s a many resources that shows an animator what to draw, how to draw it, and the principles that bring it to life. This is not that kind of resource. This is a book for the up and coming Walt Disneys. This is the whole scope of the craft, as it is presently running. Not to mention, it does bring up fantastic points for motion graphic artists, which I’ve noticed there isn’t much beyond the standard youtube tutorials that explain HOW to do something, not why.

Yes, this is a book about WHY animators do the things they do in an animated feature/series. That, is a rare find in a resource nowadays.
This is a book that teaches you to think, not just follow instructions. It goes over color theory, the reason for storyboards, the goal setting that an animator needs to be driven… really, it’s a book with direction for young animators, and direction is something sorely needed for students these days.
