This is a book which targets middle-school students but it will satisfy audiences much older than that. Kleeman and Barrett cover China since the earliest records and mythology through 589 C.E. and the defeat of the Chen dynasty which led to the reunification of China. The book contains innumerable fabulous and wonderful stories about the ancient Chinese culture and heritage. It's unfortunate that this volume is so much richer than what we give our high school students. Additionally, for those who plan to do the teach-English-overseas-for-a-year thing, this book is terrific for that missing in-service you'll crucially need to learn the history of all the ancient culture affecting modern day customs. This book is preferable in that regard because it approaches history from a primary source perspective, starting with the literature and artifacts of archaeology and moving forward.

Not sure here about the paper quality. I have the whole series. Somehow the paper in this book is off. Binding is excellent. I think the quality of the paper is definitely different from the other volumes I have. Odd.

This book was so engaging that my lersson plans could not keep up with the kids reading pace.

Fabulous! Reads like an award winning YA novel and presents Chinese history, with its unfamiliar names and language in a thoroughly approachable and yet rigorous manner.

Next year I am going to build a whole, longer unit around this one volume and skip a book in the series that covers a period that the kids get over and over, in favor of more time for this gem.

Kleeman and Barrett have a good kid-friendly book, full of sidebars, graphics and stories, which offers a healthy sample of fascinating angles on ancient China. It's an entertaining introduction, a step or two short of an interactive CD ROM.

this books helped me understand the beginnings of the Chinese civilization and how the culture evolved. It is full of primary sources and excellent examples of art/artifacts that demonstrate what the author is explaining.
